Rabbit Fur Tracers.....Questions
« on: April 17, 2010, 04:52:00 PM »
Hey all,

I recently read a post about how some people use strips of Rabbit fur at the end of their arrows as a TRACER to allow them to follow the flight of their arrows better.  I think that would work for me since I have a hard time seeing my arrows in flight no matter what color or style of fletch I use.  Before I buy the stuff to try it I wanted to ask a question or 2 about it.

As for the Rabbit fur strips, I searched the web looking for them and found lots of links to fly tying shops and fly fishing shops.  They are called ZONKER STRIPS and are 1/8th inch wide.  There are also MAGNUM ZONKER STRIPS that are 1/4th inch wide.  First, is this the type of rabbit fur I should get, ZONKER STRIPS?  Next, what size would work the best, 1/8th or 1/4th inch.
I am also going to use 2 sided tape to attach them since I am not going to learn to tie flies just for this project.

So if you all can tell me what rabbit fur material would be the best to use, I can get off to the races.  Also, for those that have and use these "TRACERS" is there a color that shows up better than others?

Any other advice or instructions you all have for me before I start would be welcomed.

Thanks for your time and help.

I used the magnum strips from bass pro. 1/4" wide. I put them on with super glue and they seem to stay on fine. Chartruse shows up best for me.

I sure 3Rivers will have them also. Pick your favorite color.

Nalajr, 1/4" is about right. You can go to the 3 Rivers site and do a search for "tracers" and click on the link. There is a video that shows Dale putting on a self adhesive synthetic fur trace that they sell.

You can buy them from 3 Rivers or use the fly tying zonker strips or cut them from a rabbit skin (what I do). If you cut them, carefully slice from the skin side trying not to cut through the fur.

White is easy to see as well as orange or bright yellow. They help some in flight but are amazing when they hit the target or game and puff out. They look like ping pong balls when they hit.
