Tejon pigs Redux...
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:30:00 PM »
Well,
I just go back from my second time pig hunting. I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting a spring membership to Tejon next year. This pig stuff is too much fun!

I, in my continuing gluttony for punishment, brought my longbow back up to the ranch to try and kill a pig during one of the Pig-O-Rama hunts this weekend. As usual with me, no dead animals, but a couple close calls and a bunch of miles on the boots.

Got my camp set-up.

Spent the first afternoon looking around this liitle bowl that a guide told me usually does not have any rifle hunters in it due to the tight cover. I saw some oldish sign, but no pigs. Then I saw these laid over the trail I came in on. Looks pretty fresh too. Probably why there were no pigs running around.

Spent the next day moving and glassing, saw some pigs early and late, but I could not find anything during the middle of the day. I really need to spend some more time looking and figure these guys out. Deer all over the place, must have seen 25-30 head.

I managed to get on two stalks on pigs, and both time got to about 30 yards only to get busted by the wind. It was swirly all day and constantly switching around in the canyons.
I have a 20 yard max limit because I aint that good with the longbow yet, and I don't want to go flinging arrows at pigs - but it was nice to know that I can move in quiet and get close.
They sure don't see like a deer though, which seemed to help me a lot. Creeping in, arrow on the string, telling myself just to make it to that next tree, and I can take the shot, sure is what it's all about - even when it ends with a running pig.
Thanks,
Jim Anderson

Good effort! That wind wrecks alot of stalks.

Good effort Jim! I'm thinking about hunting Tejon next year myself, didn't have much luck this year in Texas.
