2nd KY Turkey down!
« on: April 21, 2010, 11:45:00 AM »
Well hadnt gotten to hunt much, got a fat Jake, 4" beard and 20# yesterday morning, set up today at another place been seeing several birds, all gobblers. Fog was thick as soup, set up at 8am, had birds coming by at 10am. One big gobbler about 200yds off, wouldnt come to calling, but 2 jakes came up at 12 and 14 yards. I was in a big open pop up with a ghillie and spandex head mask on. I raised my bow when this turkey had his back to me, started drawing and halfway thru the draw he whirled aruound facing me! I was committed so I picked a spot, He raised his head up and went PTT and I let her fly, thru the chest, right under the right wing and cut a big hole out the back. He whirled, bounced a couple of times then took off over the bank and glided about 50 yards where he crashed. I watched him for about 15 mintues, packed everything up and retrieved him. My arrow fell out 1/2 way across the field. I was shooting a #50, 60" Quinn Stallion, 28 1/2" GT 35/55, w/200grain Ace standard 2 blade, cut a BBIIIGGG HOOOLe! I was stoked to ge these birds, after getting all 4 last fall with a trad bow here in KY, a lot of folks told me it was a lot easier in the fall than the spring, and maybe so, Jakes are kinda stupid, but I am proud of any game taken with a trad bow. One guy told me it would be impossible to do in the spring, gonna take him some pics tonight. Just thought I would share.

Hey TJ, are the toms henned up where you are. Down here, next to the Tenn. Border, hens are on the nest, toms running everywhere. I havent seen a hen in over a week. The one I shot yesteday was with 6 other jakes as they strolled by.

Had a hen doing circles around the blind Monday. I'm waiting for them to nest up. Gobblers everywhere this year. Just waiting on one of them to mess up again. Upload some hero shots.

Samuel, congrats on getting it done! I have been hard at it in KY and IL but so far no luck. This is hard work  :)

TJ hunted in Christian Co over the weekend. Lord those birds are henned up there and absolutely the most call shy birds I have ever been around. I was just happy to be back in IL today to have a chance  ;)  Joebuck is sending me something soon that I hope to use on these Yankee birds and then try it on the birds from the Bluegrass State. Good luck!

Yeah Michael our birds get to see many hunters every year. They get a little shy after the first few days. After the third day I don't call much at all. A moving decoy in an area they want to be in works best in my opinion from here on out.

Congrats Sam!

My son and I used a "Pretty Boy" this weekend which seemed to really shut the birds down.  With the HUGE hatch 2 years ago and Tons of Jake birds last year we have an abundance of 2 yo longbeards....of the 7 longbeards we were on this weekend none of them would strut, but would only gobble at the decoys and stayed 100+ yards out.  Got too may "honey-do's" this week, but hope to give hen decoys only a shot this weekend.

Thanks guys, as I have said before, I am no great shakes as a turkey hunter, just lucky and a lot of young, dumb birds. I will take that as a blessing and got the turkey breast strips marinating for  supper tonight.

Nice job Sam.  I had awesome luck using the primos jake mobile with a real jake fan. I limited out with 3 nebraska longbeards in 4 days.

Thanks Curt, you will be loaded down with turkeys soon with that great Ghillie set up you have made. I have one, strips of leafy wear sewon on netting similar to yours, with some burlap, but I also found rolls of acrylic camo yarn at Wal-mart for cheap, cut different lengths and tied around at odd places, kinda looks like Swamp Thing from the comic books, but works great.
