Arrow grain on woodies
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:28:00 AM »
I just got my delivery of Sitka spruce shafts from Hildebrant and am pleased with the straightness and weights. (65-69 @ 364-369gr 11/32 tapered last 12" to 5/16) I dont have a spine tester and am "assuming" that with the nocks at 90 deg to grain, that my spines will be proper? am I correct? Is that the way they are measured by Hilde? Can't wait to shoot wood again, been shooting carbon but believe i can get these woods to shoot as well. Just something about wood..

When the arrow is nocked, the cross grain should be horizontal to the ground, like this: =  That will be the stiff side, and the way the arrow is spined at the manufacturer.

The riff, if any, should point away from you on the top of the arrow, like this >>>>>>>>>>>>. It has nothing to do with the spine, but it's a safety thing if the arrow should break at some point.

Thanks scattershot, that's the way I had it figured and know about the riff direction. It's been awhile since i did wood.
