recurve string length
« on: May 03, 2010, 01:25:00 PM »
i recently acquired a shakespeare super necedah recurve from a fellow tradganger via classifieds, and want to make a flemish twist string for it, but im unsure what length to make it. the bow is marked 54"(not AMO) and the current string is 50" although i think it may be an inch or so short. the bow shoots noisy with the current string, which leads me to believe a string a little longer will help. any suggestions?

Trial and error--since you are making the string, that will make it a bit cheaper.

AMO says 3" shorter.  The old "rule of thumb" says 4" shorter.  I've seen recurves vary from 2.5"-6" shorter than the AMO bow length.

Unless it's a really poorly made string and/or has no silencers on it, a longer string will mean a lower brace height, which generally increases noise.

thanks for the replies, im going to  make the string a bit longer and adjust it till i get the bow to where it likes. the old string was endless loop, and theres really nothing wrong with it but i prefer flemish twist for ease of adding string silencers, etc.

I have a 55# Super Necedah. I made a 50" 14 strand B50 string and brace it at 8 1/8"...shoots real good there

like mentioned...used to be 4 inches and now is 3 inches....go with the 4 inch setup now and you can twist it up an inch fairly easy or untwist a little if needed.  I always felt it safer to twist it up than to untwist it..for fear of going too far.

You might try a 10 or 12 strand flemish which should quiet it down a bit too.
Will probably perform better too. I like 3" less on a recurve so you don't have to twist them up too much. You wind up with more string than you need negating the lighter string in the first place.
