Flemish Twist ?s

I have a few questions about making a flemish twist string.  I have done it once but forgot a few things.  I made a jig according to the plans on the how-to forum: 30" long board/end nails spaced 28" apart and about 1 1/4" apart from each other.  I have read that the first nail for length (3" from end of board) is what you would use for a 48" bow but I read somewhere else that it would make a 48" string.  It makes sense to me that it would be the length of the string and not the bow lengths since you would make a different length string for a longbow or recurve.  Also, can you use the same color for both sets of strands or do you need a different color to figure out what you are doing?  Hope this makes sense.

I have no idea on how that board is set up so no help there.
But you can make a string with as few or as many colors as you want. Just keep track of what you're doing.

Doug, it could be 48 or 46, no board is universal. Different folks, different twists!

The board is just a paramonor,and really only provides you with tapered ends in each bundle. Oh, and something to store away.

Really, though you need to find what lengths work for you, and keep notes and mark each peg acccordingly. Just like shooting a bow, you need to find the correct set-up, and go from there. Also, longbow, recurve, loop lengths, etc, ect, determine the outcome.

It can be really simple or as complicated as you want. First time I showed my Dad mine, 30 years ago, he said, New Cribbage type board?

When I make a board I put the movable middle peg near the middle hole and make a string. Then I measure the string and mark the hole at that peg to that length. I use actual string length marks on my boards. Each string maker will have a slight differences in amount of twist, size of end loops, etc. so there is no exact standard for marking the board to finished string length.
