NY Turkeys
« on: May 06, 2010, 10:38:00 AM »
Man their kickin my butt!! Ive been having a blast the last few days no real close encounters but alot of gobbling but as usual the hens are everywhere! Day before yesterday had a nice longbeard hang up at 60 yards wanting my hen decoys to follow him. When they didnt he decided to head for the woods where it was a little more dry.

I was going to head out today after work but to windy so ill wait until morning. Hows everyone else doing thus far? I see Guru has already scored congrats! Good luck NY Turkey Bowhunters hope things start to change for the better.

I went out last weekend with both the bow and shotgun. I hunt a couple of mountains and if they are low enough I can set up in this one small field but if they are where they usually are on top of the mountain then using the bow is tough without a blind. I think I'm going to invest in a ghillie suit when i get to be a better turkey caller. I was planning on making the 3 1/2 hour drive from long island up the catskills thisweekend but with the rain and wind in the forecast I might stay on long island.

Had a nice tom opening day at 30 yds but he didn't hang around.

Got a late start this morning, started working one tom but after 30 minutes he clammed up. Eased over to another area and bumped 4 hens and one tom.

Frustrating but I wouldn't want it any other way. Will be out early tomorrow morning....

Went out Saturday and Sunday morning, had at 4 gobblers around me Sat. and 3 on Sunday.  Took one nice gobbler Sat. (shotgun though) and had another nice tom 50-60 yards in the field with 4 hens on Sunday.  Would not come in, but they have been around at least.

In addition, I saw 6 deer and a fox that morning, so it was quite enjoyable all around....

Worked a tom with Adkmountainken one mourning this week but he hung up and outsmarted us. That's the only action I have had.

Only got out Saturday morning for a couple of hours till the skies opened up.  Hit 2 spots, not a gobble or sighting anywhere.  Had my son's 1st Communion on Sunday, so did not get out.

Love hunting the hills around Salamanca, NY.  Birds are tuff to kill there but the scenery is beautiful.

Been working 2 longbeards a few days I hunted NY last week, they keep either hanging up at 40yds and struting for an hour or more, or coming in next to the blind not offering a shot. Gonna head out later in the week and set up on the knoll where they keep strutting. I've just been filming and calling for my buddy who hasn't hunted trad in 7 years....he's using my Gamemaster 2 and I think the birds will be in trouble if they step inside 20yds! Thursday I'll be running the camera for him in CT.

Today we saw a few bucks, one was already over his ears, about as big around as my wrist and both sides were already splitting. The others were just little 3" nubs......but that big guy has REAL potential!

Well...it happened....left work early Monday night and caught a few hours sleep. Hit the woods late Tuesday, around 8am.

I eased into a setup I haven't hunted yet and started calling. About 30 minutes later I catch movement in a field and headed my way are 3 hens, a jake and a real nice tom.

I worked them in and now it was shut up and wait. As the hens came in and pecked around the big tom was displaying ever so beautifully 25 yds out. Through my headnet I was watching the hens and figuring the best time to draw.

20 yds the tom stood and started to turn and display and I drew back the little Browning Cobra but 2 hens picked me up and started running. I probably had more time than I thought as the tom really didn't spook yet BUT..I rushed the shot.

The arrow hit low and all the Snuffer took was some feathers off the belly. I watched the birds haul a** for a good 70 yds. Picked up the arrow and sure enough...no blood...just some pillow stuffing. Thursday and Friday this week...hope for second chance..

Keep at it boys. I had a flock of 30-40 birds with 3 struuters come in Sunday. I was so panicked I would get busted I blew the entire set up. Hunted PA yesterday and lots of gobbles but no toms or jakes. 1 hen at about 5 yards and looked tempting but that is a fall hunt. Will be back out Sun, Mon, & Tues

Joe, sounds like an awesome hunt. Killing is just icing. It's everything else that makes it special.  Great job on a VERY successful hunt!

Joe, I did the same thing on a slightly puffed up bird.  All I got were feathers.  He flew across the the field and 100ft up in an oak tree looking back at the situation LOL!

It was the coolest miss I've ever had.  Sure was neat to get the draw on 3 turkeys that snuck in while watching another one strutting in all at 13yds!

My season here is over though, good luck to ya'll!!

Maaaaaaaaaan to many hens!!!!! Went to one of my real good spots heard one gobble three times then he shut up. Few minutes later have a hen behind me on the opposite side of the hedgerow arguing with me. Eventually she hushed up too.
