Silencer Question

Ok when you mount the silencers on the string (in my case whiskers), do they have to be at exactly the same spot on the either side of the string, or can you just go by eye? Does it affect arrow flight either way?

I've always mounted them on the same spot top & bottom, it can affect tune a little depending on what you use & the location you place the string silencers which is why I also trim my silencers to get the best of both worlds.

I remember reading somewhere, not sure where, that you need to place them at certain places to eliminate string vibration. something like dividing string in 1/3's or 1/4's. Maybe someone else will remember better than I do.

Most of the time it seems to work best to space them 1/2 between your nock and the tip of the bow if you're using two silencers.
Each bow is a bit different and you'll most likely need to move them up or down a little to really tune out the noise and vibes.

Adding weight to the string slows it down.
Whether or not you'll notice a difference in arrow flight....you'll have to try it. I haven't noticed a difference. I'm not a great shot either

And no they don't have to be equidistant. Just normally the harmonics are well dampened that way.

OL Adcock in Tuning Longbows and Recurves recommends placing the silencers at the 1/4 points. "Measure from where the string just touches the limb to the other point where it just touches the limb, divide by 4 and place the silencers there."

That's what I've been doing for years.  It does mean each silencer is the same distance from the tip or recurve/string junction.  Works for me.

I use the 1/4th - 1/3rd measurements.

1/3rd is really better than 1/4th if you have a bow that really needs toning down.  

I wish we still had that thread by Lee Robinson who really discected string harmonics years ago....its was a GREAT thread and he proved that the 1/3rd position was the best with video references.  You could actually SEE why it was best.  That was proven for most bows, but I'm sure that there are exeptions.

Don't know what ever happened to Lee....He's been MIA for a long time now.

I mount mine on 1/3 or 1/4 spots for my bows also.But mount them the same on top and bottom.

Mount same top and bottom.  I use to measure the whole deal but now a days I eye ball it (after a few times you get pretty close.  Then with my wool puffs I slide them up and down when fine tuning to find the best spot.

I'm going to try the 1/3 on my hybrid longbow since the 1/4 isn't working noise wise.

I know it has been tested many times. BUT don't sweat it much just eye ball it and put them on the string. The harmonics are definitely different on different places on the string, just not enough to sweat it.

Some people would get their panties in a wad about silencers and ignore something important like a scary sharp broadhead on a well tuned arrow.

I hear ya Jack...if you are going to sharpen a broadhead, you might as well sharpen it all the way...

And if you are going to tune your set up, you gotta go all the way to laser flight....

And if you are going to quiet your bow(which I feel is very important) and install silencers, you might as well put them in the proper place to quiet the best, and evenly spaced so's not to throw off your tune, which could ruin the effort you put into those broadheads.

I wondered who would challenge  me when I posted that , I just feel sometimes we go a little far in the measure this ,measure that department    

I also feel all of it is one component , but the silencers being evenly spaced to the 1/8 of an inch is a bit much for me . Eye balling them is close enough to me .

Then again I'm anal about nocking points , go figure     :rolleyes:

No worries Jack....I hear ya.  I agree TOTALLY that there is a lot of 'panty wad static' out there, but all those things I mentioned above are part of the basics to me....along with STABLE nock points(part of tuning) and accuracy!!!

If you want to have fun, tie your cat whiskers on a fraction loose.  After a bunch of shots, they will move to the place they like best.

I generally just eyeball it, but I've been doing it a while -- all my bows are the same length.

Folks I just put some of the Mathew's "Monkey tail" silencers on a bow and they work pretty nicely. You will get used to the look after awhile.....sort of grows on you. Nice thing about is that they sit tight but wrap around the string and can be moved to your hearts desire. tom

I use 1/4's with the Monkey tail and like them too.
