GT arrows spine stiffer than Beman?
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:53:00 PM »
I have been shooting GT traditional 3555's out of my recurve.  They are 30 inches long with 125 grain points and fly bareshaft and fletched perfect.  I picked up some Beman 500 MFX Classics in the same spine as the GT's.  I bare shaft tuned the same length as the GT's with 125 up front and they show way weak.  Even tried 100 up front, same thing, weak.  Could the smaller diameter make them spine that much weaker?  I dont't have a whole lot of arrow to work with, maybe an inch I could cut off to stiffen arrow. Has anyone else run into this with the Bemans?

Not weaker, just closer to center due to the smaller diameter.

Yep, cut them down or add to the side plate. One inch is carbon will really effect the spine.

Build your sideplate out just a smidge until they tune with the point weight you want.Diameter is the biggest thing but they are also heavier which will make them shoot a little weaker than the same spine in a lighter shaft.
....Quality deer management means shooting them before they get tough....

As stated, smaller dia. Shaft will be like having a bow cut closer to or past center shot, and it will change the spine requirement between the two arrows.  However, I have found the GT3555 to be weaker than the standard Beman 500 shafts.  I would try more weight first just to rule out a false weak indication do to being too stiff.  It is always better to make sure of this before cutting.
