That is how my wife and I scored our targets on a local 3d shoot yesterday. K-kill, W-wound, M-miss

I get tired of always going for the magic "12" and it sure was nice to just concentrate behind that front leg and release. Naturally you hope to see a bunch of K's on your card at the end, maybe a few M's
and wishfully thinking no W's. Puts a different feeling behind each arrow. It was a good day.

                    Good Shooting,

Great Idea Craig.

Curious, would you consider a gut shot a wound?  It would be lethal and not the optimum shot placement but it would be a kill.  Do you only consider heart and lungs kills I guess is my question.

I love the idea of not keeping score!  Puts the fun back in.

Charlie,
For us a gut shot was a wound. We scored kills as good solid hits in the vitals with the only exception being a quartering away shot where if you were close to the vital line you new it was going up into the boiler room.

I always thought on these "scored" 3d shoots a wound should be a minus, but that is just my thought.

Craig,
I have been scoring like this for years, and I honestly think that is how a 3D (emphasis on 3) tournament should be scored...just using the rings is really a 2D tournament. Unles every shot is a perfect broadside shot. Given a quartering away shot, your "5" may in fact be a much more lethal shot than my "10". I really feel that the current system promotes negative-habit-transfer. When someone is placed in an actual hunting situation where the animal is not holding that perfect broadside position, if they shoot a live animal where they think the 10 or 12 ring is, they may not get as good of a killing shot. It is a much more realistic way of practicing for hunting...and at the end of the day, it gives you an accurate assesment of how well you are prepared for the hunt. Sorry for the rant, but I am glad to see more people thinking this way!

Now and then we use what we call hunter scoreing. The 8 ring is a kill, anything else is a wound and a miss is a miss. You get 1 point for a kill,-1 for wound and 0 for a miss. At the end of a 30 target course the scores can be eye opening. I have seen guys win the day on 30 target course with an 11. Some guys and gals were in negative numbers. It was really neat take on the whole thing!

We tried the minus idea 30-35 years ago here in our area of Ohio. The attendance dropped like a rock. People that are just getting started wants to feel like the crowd and if there score was bad they felt embarassed and would not come back.

That has been the only way I have scored for years. As individuals we know from our shot placement what type of outcome we would have, which is enough.

I started 3D about ayear ago and have to shoot with the wheels because trad shooters in this area are few and far between. I have been using 8=kill,0=a miss and I score them according to the arrow not the lines. I have actually been in some heated discussions with the wheelies over my scoring, with them saying I'm cheating ,especially on quartering away shots. So I learned to shoot by myself or my son(also trad) to avoid the hassle.  :archer:

There is one club in my neighborhood that scores a kill as 10 points, a wound as minus 5 and a miss as 0., but most follow the standard scoring.  I rather like the KWM method and use it for practice sessions.

Thats how we scored silhouette shoots in the 70's.  Good shooters would be in the range of 70% k's.  When compounds with sights became comman, you would end up with a lot of people with all k's, so we switched to scores.

Craig,
I score very similarly.  Being a veterinarian, I tell people the anatomy of what the arrow passed through and what's the probability of a fatal shot.

I go one step further...saying you don't even have chance of finding that wounded animal without a tracking dog.

PS: I never turn a score card in but I am more than willing to shoot for breakfast with anyone  :)   Doc

Doc,
You sound like my kind of shooter. The one shoot that a bunch of us attend in September is always good for a "coffee" shot or two.

Craig,

When I started hitting the "circuit" around PA, (Whittingham, BBTC, Warriors Mark, PLA/Marsh Hill, then Denton, (Gawd I burned up a lot of gas and vacation in those days)we always scored like that: Mike Carter, Phil Magistro, Phil Pfanders, 2 Dogs, etc... we had a blast.

I refuse to shoot for mid lung. Too hard to shift gears under pressure in real hunting shot... my 3D is always wore out behind the leg, not the replaceable core.

One year, we all got a square of rabbit fur and based on the total kill shots (each shot was scored by "best kill" and that shooter "got that target", so it got competitive)ended up taking everyone else's "scalp" (rabbit patch).

The guy who was then head of PLA shaved his head. One guy spent a good bit of time trimming, then shaving the tanned rabbit hide... that was 'his' scalp... it was highly coveted at Marsh Hill in the day!

Thanks for the memory jog! I score a 12 now, I pulled my shot!  :(

Marsh Hill will be here in a few weeks Dave. You ought to think about burning up a little more gas.

It is my wifes favorite shoot...close targets and soft-serve ice cream!!!!

:)  Time was, Craig, time was... wouldn't miss a one of them.

Now, only job I could find has zippo for vacation mixed in w/ sick leave, so can't spend it.

Just got notice we're now going to have to pay our Sewer and water bill in the apt... so nah, ain't going to drive forever plus 20 miles to get to Marsh Hill from here!  :)

They didn't have soft serve when I went though!  :)  That and when it went to 4 days, that totally took it off the schedule...
