Ever wonder if all your carbon arrows are the same spine?
« on: May 23, 2010, 09:36:00 PM »
Here is a example of the same carbon shafts.I made up a dozen and a year later I ordered another dozen of same size and finish. When I checked the new ones on my spine meter they showed some were way off in spine and could not be used to match my others. Some showed weight difference also?
I have always thought with the same size and finish, carbon would be the same. I think Easton Alum shafts might be consistant?
I think the best thing to do is check the spine on all your same type arrows to see if they are the same?
If you do not have a spine meter scale, use someone elses.
I have a meter that is out of the 70's and does not scale the same as some wood I get from arrow dealers, but I know what shoots in my bow from my scale and that is all that matters?
I see ACE has a new scale under a $ 100.00 and one for over $ 200.00 and I wonder which is better? Ken

Happened t me last year. I bought a dozen at Baltimore, and loved them. When I got home, I ordered another dozen from a reputable sponsor, and they were much stiffer. Can't use them. I had merrily and naively cut a few to length, so I am stuck with these things. Maybe I can make a "willow back rest" with them.

Bad part is, I dunno which batch is the right spine, as they don't measure spine with my tester, evidently. So I went with another brand, which seems fine. So far.

I own one of each. They both work extremely well, but the more expensive one can be set to spine carbons and aluminums to the same specs used by the manufacturers (which is different than how they spine wood shafts). With that being the case, for your purposes, I'd opt for the larger model.

Also when checking wood arrows on your scale, make sure the grain is up and down. But when it is nocked on the bowstring the grain will be level to the ground. I have found many times one or more of the matched wood  arrows are different spine. Someone who put on the nocks made a mistake or misread the scale? It is a good idea to check all your matched arrows?
Also Killdeer brought up a good point ( spine before you cut shafts, then you can send them back if they are not correct)? Ken

Interesting. I need to get a meter. It would be nice to know that I start bareshaft tuning with matched arrows. I will usually shoot all the cut bareshafts to make sure they all hit the same before fletching. Sometimes a little nock rotation will bring it in to the group.

I had similar findings as killdeer with a certain brand of arrow shaft and no longer use them.

For me even if I order the same size carbon I still will go through my tuning again, just to be sure.

I usually stick with Easton,Beman and Carbon Tech products and they are plenty close enough.Lots of brands out there than are very consistant and just a few that need checking.I avoid those in most cases and avoid culls when I do buy them.jmo
....Quality deer management means shooting them before they get tough....
