Samick Phantom- further mod?
« on: May 30, 2010, 12:33:00 PM »
Ordered without handling one (knew of the risk), so don't know if the model I got was representative of others.

It was not cut past center, the grip was pretty fat too. So out came the Dremel. I slapped a rug rest from BW on it and the arrow still sits a tiny bit farther out than I like.

Am running the same arrows I used in my 55#SA2 (the Pahntom hits 54#@28"). They are not shooting as well..........think that due to riser being out a tad more.

Ran a straightedge across the bow, then drew it on a rack and checked.......dims the same from straight edge to various riser points- I'm not getting deflection (riser then OK).

Not sure if taking a little bit more off is a good idea.

Might trade it in on a Hoyt Dorado.

You wouldn't happen to be creepingdeath from the Mathews forum are you?  Looks like the same bow and mods.  I go by IBOWHUNT4FUN over there.  I just got a Samick Sage TD.

I had one of these. Yeah the riser IS a little bulky. I can't recall if it was cut to center or not. It seemed like it at the time but it was one of my first bows and I really didn't know a whole lot at that point.

My only complaint about the bow was that the pegs keeping the takedown limbs aligned popped out one day when I took the bow down. I glued them in and didn't have a problem after that.

FYI, it shot Easton 2117's and 2018's like a dream with 125g or 145g tips.

Yeah, I used to be on that forum, figured it best that I leave (trying to control my temper dontcha know). A few folks were pretty annoying, one really bad and I wasn't going to play nice anymore.

I'm running 460 gr GT55/75s......little shocky, but tolerable. Add 50 more to the front and it might be better. Spine seems a little stiff, even after mods the arrow sits out just a little more than I like. Might try a thinner shelf pad.

So you got the Sage.

Years ago I had a Huntmaster, sold by Hoyt. Similar dial purpose type of riser. PSE later sold that same bow (Blackhawk), then a 2" longer version. Samick still sells it, called the HST or something like it. The Sage looks to be like it, but of different riser wood/lam.

The old Hoyt/PSE was 58 and then 60".

Not sure what the Sage is tip to tip.

The Phantom is 62" and a bit longer than I like for treestand hunting (prefer 58").

As for limb alignment pins popping out, I'm not worried. I have Brownells Microbedding, Accraglass and of course..............JB Weld.

Speaking of JB Weld..........why doesn't somebody just run a sub down by that leaking oil well and plug it with some?   :biglaugh:

Arrow:

30" long, GT 55/75.

125 gr tip, standard insert. 50 gr added up front.

I ran this setup on a 30.5" arrow out of my 55 and 57# Blackwidow SA2's and they shot FANTASTIC.

My Phantom runs 54# (all bows rated at 28") and for whatever reason, they aren't as good from this bow.

The arrow sits out a bit more, not much......and I ran 18 strand strings on my Widows. Haven't checked what the strand count is on my stock Phantom string, but it's not anorexic.

If 50 gr more doesn't fully correct the issue, I'm gonna have to take a tiny bit more off the inside edge of the riser.

Have a hard time thinking .5" of shaft is making this much difference. If it can, then the 50 grains I'll add should correct it. That'll put me a little over 500 grains and I'm cool with that. This is a hunting bow, not a 3D setup.

If it behaves then, I might order a set of limbs a little lighter, for target or bowfishing.

If I do that then I'll no doubt have to use 35/55's and experiment. The 55/75's will be outside my desired adjustment range.

I gotta draw up some brackets, have a bud machine them. They'll mount atop the brass limb bushings, angle back and have a hole in them for adding a quiver. No flat head limb bolts, will just use button head and let the bracket compress gainst the stock bushing, use to bolt D to center it.

Shouldn't shift much, I did a similar deal on my last 2 Widows and they were fine (but had a bolt and two limb studs (3 point alignment instead of 2).

I'll just have them machined from medium hardness aluminum. Hope they get done in a couple of days. Been on the web trying to find a source for old Delta quivers. The new Bear is like it. Beefy brackets made for super quiet and sturdy attachment.

Yeah I am finding myself on this forum more and over there a little less.  I was on "the largest archery community" for a while as well and could not understand all the bashing and insults from people over there so I left.  So far, I have no complaints about this site.  Thanks for your help on here and the other forum as well.

You're welcome.

Yeah the "other" forums......it is hard, not to hunt those people down and teach them a lesson.

Not sure we could knock any sense into them anyway.

Might make for good cardio in trying.

But then we might break a finger or something, have to use a mechanical release and training wheels until healed.
