help with arrow selection
« on: June 06, 2010, 02:57:00 PM »
Hi,

I have received a Ben Pearson Hunter recurve it is #45 @28 I have tried measuring my draw length and it seems like it is 27".

I am wondering if anyone can help me pick some arrows to use with this bow, and where to find them. I am on a bit of a budget so if you can keep that in mind it would be great.

I have no experience with tunning or setting up arrows so i don't want to try to many different arrows atleast not till i have some practice.

Some cedars spined 50-55#, cut to 28 inches Back of Point and 125 grain heads should work fine.  Good luck.

I thought wooden shafts are harder to tune and maintain then the modern options? Where is a good place to get cedar shafts? I would love to try them.

I'm new to this. I had a dickens of a time tuning arrows. Mine were cut to 28" cause my draw was 27". Over time, my draw increased to 28" which made my arrows too short. My advice is to buy arrows of the correct spine range, don't cut them until you are sure what length you need. A little longer doesn't hurt.

Oh, download Stu's Calculator and play around with different arrows. Plug in your bow, and arrows like 3555's and 2016's, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion on the calculator i had actually been trying to find something like that with no luck.

I was a little confused at first and had some trouble getting the spine as low as suggested, but with some altering of the arrow i got the 2016 with in .2 gr of the recommended with the use of a weight tube, 125 gr head, and making the arrow 28.5". I also got gt tradional 1535 within .6 gr.

Frank i don't think i can thank you enough for suggesting the STU Calculator i know know what i need to finally start using my bow.

I have a new in package dacron string that is 30+ years old it has never been straightened out i am wondering if i should try this string or just get a new one?

No problema! The guys here saved me loads of money. I'm now the "don't cut arrows until you're sure" advocate!

And I wouldn't cut the arrows to 28 1/2" until you've shot them awhile.. I purposely left my new ones at 31".

I'm not sure about the string.

i draw 27 to 28", shoot cedars out of my super necedah thats 45#@28" i cut my arrows to 29 1/2" and even some to 28 1/2", and they shoot fine. i got my cedars from kustom king. another option is to make some self arows from wooden poplar dowels, which i have done and got good results. usually i go with 1 1/2" longer than my draw, or 1 inch in front of the arrow shelf at my draw length. also i shoot grizzly 160 grain broadheads, and trade points that run from 160 to 175 grain.my shortest bow i draw to 27", shoot the 28 1/2 inch arrows out of it.all my cedars are 50-55# spine. hope this helps a bit. good luck.

I wont cut them till I can double check draw length and test arrow flight it is just nice to be able to see where i should be starting and the most probable ending point. how should i add in the use of a weight tube into the calculator?

I found a great guy on here who is making me a new string FOR FREE!! so the string question is no longer needed i will keep it as just another thing from my grandfather. I have all his original archery gear.
