moving target ideas
« on: June 29, 2010, 03:17:00 PM »
I would like to get some ideas on how to practice shooting at moving targets. Maybe somthing simple and easy to set up in my back yard. Post some pictures if you have some targets set up for moving practice. I think it would be very helpful to me in my hunting to become a better shot at moving targets. I'm not talking about running animals or unethical shots. Somtimes its hard to get a deer to stop in that perfect spot and hogs are constantly moving while they are feeding. What do you think?  :archer2:

go get yourself a small tire....13 inch for cars,  small trailer whatever.  Just the rubber,  no rim!  Now get some cardboard and cut it round a little smaller than the tire circumfrence (go hit up your local pizza place!).  You really only need 1 piece like this.  Ductape it flush with 1 side of the tire,  covering the hole where the rim would be.  Now with a razor or such,  cut a hole in the center of that cardboard 6, 8, 10 inches  (how good are ya?!) or so.  Go get some decent size balloons.  Blow them up so they fit snugg in the cardboards hole.  Now you can have a buddy role that sucker across your shooting lane and pop those balloons out from your new moving target.  Works killer with metal blunts like the Hex!

Do you have a cat and some string? just kidden. Kick an old ball(basket ball, soccer ball ect.) around the yard.

I have tied wire on a angle between two trees  and used a 3-d target to slide down the wire. You will need bailing wire,3 screw in eye bolts,3 pulleys and a long rope. I screw in the two eye bolts with pulleys attacted into the 3-d traget(I like a small or a one peace 3-d). One eye bolt and pulley attached to the up hill tree then put the 3-d on the wire with the rope attatched and ran throught the pulley on the tree. Pull the 3-d back using the rope and let it go,it works like a zipp line.

Kinda same princible as twitch but I use 3/8 nylon rope as my zipline and some pulleys from my local CO-OP w/ a stuffed feed sack tied to the pulleys.I also have several Iscrews in several trees and thread 1/4'' cotton rope(because it's light weight) thru them to my desired distant   from the target.
I then pull the target w/ the cotton rope and stept on the rope until I'm ready to shoot and then stept off the rope and FIRE.

The ball trick mentioned above works great. Ed & I took a little air out of his basketball and shoot it with rubber blunts. Amazing practice. He even has come up with a scoring system. One of us will kick the ball and you get 3 points for each time you hit the ball while moving. Then after it stops you each get one shot for 1 point. Keep track and enjoy.

I always had the best luck with rolling a tire or round foam target, aimed ahead of it and worked on the lead distance by rollong it at different speeds. Or like Twitchstick mentioned  above.

A simple way to get a target moving is just suspend it on a rope, and get it swinging back and forth. The longer the rope, the longer it will swing on its own. You can get multiple shots in both directions from one good push.
