hunting/3D bow

I need a long bow for 3D and Hunting. I dont really like a heavy draw weight. The state minimum is 40 lbs. I hunt mostly Hogs and deer. I would like opinions on the least poundage I can get by with I will be buyiny a black widow

There is one heck of a pile of deer and hogs that have died of an arrow from a 40# bow.  Some great big old boar hogs might be better with a little more weight though.

I'd go just a bit heavier but know many a deer have died from that weight!

What draw lenght?  Makes a lot of difference I think.

50 lbs will do it.  Get close and aim true.  I shoot 55 lbs with high foc arrows for elk and bear without any worry about penetration.  I would shoot the same animals with 50 lbs.  The wife hunts with 40 lbs and I don't worry about her penetration either. She just gets close enough to hit the sweet spot before shooting.

American Bison were killed by american indians with 25 lb wood bows, wood arrows, and flint tips.  They did it from horse at 5 to 20 feet.  Any bow is essentially strong enough.  The real question is at what range.

I had a 43# @ 28" Hummingbird take down I killed a couple does with it 15-20 yards. Worked great.LCH

Personally, I like heavier poundage bows in the 60# - 65# range, but these other guys are right. Many animals have been killed with lighter pulls. Still, I would recommend 50# to 55#, but only if you can handle it without difficulty. However, if you are better with the light poundage and feel more confident in your ability to hit the mark with it, then by all means go for the light pull. If you stick him in the right spot with a well tuned rig and sharp broadhead, 40# will do the job just fine.

kmunch, you mentioned 3D first before hunting. In that case, I'd find the maximum draw weight that I could comfortably handle through an entire 3D tournament and make that my hunting bow weight. Clint

I have a 43# @29" recurve [Holm-Made] that at my 29" draw, feel I could hunt anything in the deer and pig size game. I would go heavier for Elk or Moose, but most of the stuff I'll ever hunt that bow will do the job. Still have to get close and put the arrow in the right spot...
