Arrows for vintage Bear bow
« on: July 14, 2010, 12:47:00 PM »
I have a Bear Grizzly that was made in 1965 and would like to get some advice on arrow selection for this bow. The draw weight is 51# at 28" but my draw length is 27". I've never shot wood and was wondering how to determine the best arrows and if the are durable or should I go with carbon? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks guys

The Bear recurves made post 1952 were cut much closer to center therefore are really not that picky about the arrows you shoot through them. Most of my cedars are 55/60 and fly well from my Bears 45 to 65#

I just ordered up a 1/2 doz Surewood shafts from Rick @ thefeatheredshaft. I am sending him some Bear Razor heads to tip them with. Best darn wood shaft I've ever had the pleasure to shoot! Will be using them out of my new to me, 1971 Bear Kodiak Hunter.

Which ever way you go, good luck.

Wood arrows are wonderful but do require some commitment-it is a highly addicting endeavor. Think carefully before you jump in that that water. A 55/60 spine ought to meet your needs.

Respectfully, that sounds too stiff for me.
I shoot bows in that weight range, and have a 26.5" draw. I usually use an arrow spined 45-50 pounds, cut to 28". I also use 1916 aluminums, and really like 2013s, with a 175 grain head. For carbons, I use Gold tip 35-55s, again cut to 28" with a 175 grain head.
