Anybody using the brass inserts for aluminum arrows?

I was wondering who's using them and what your experience has been as far as changing spine or adjusting arrow lengths. Anyone using them for 2018's?

 I haven't used the brass inserts, but would like to try them myself. The real question is...where can you get them?

I would think a 2018 would be weak for the Silvertip 66# to begin with aluminum inserts and 100 gr. inserts would make them even weaker.You may need a stiffer arrow for the Silvertip,just a thought.

JRY309, it's confusing, but my son's name is Schafer (named after Paul    ) and the arrows are his. He's shooting 45-50 pounds. Haven't checked his draw length lately cuz he's growing like a weed.

Well,they don't make the brass insert for 2018's.They make a 2016 though and it doesn't take a lot of effort to adapt them.The way I did it was to screw a field point into the brass insert and then chuck the field point into my drill press.As it turned,I just used my broadhead file to reduce the diameter.Occasionally I would stop the drill press and check the fit with a short piece of cutoff 2018 shaft.

I can't remember exactly how much weight that took off the insert but it wasn't a lot-for sure,less than 10 grains.

Using a heavier insert is just like adding point weight.It will reduce the dynamic spine of the arrow.If the arrows are tuned now,adding the extra weight would make them considerably weaker.

On some of my setups,15-25 grains of weight up front would equal 5# of spine change.Roughly 1" of shaft length would also change spine about 5#.

Sometimes it is just best to bite the bullet and get a new set of shafts or arrows to get the proper flight that you need.

My mistake,I thought you were making them for the 66# bow.A 100 gr insert will weaken 2018 up for a 45-50# bow,but also the arrow will be pushing 600+ grains in weight.I haven't tried any of the brass inserts for aluminum arrows yet.3Rivers carries them for aluminum arrows.

VTer,when I made up my 2018's I was tuning for a pair of Mojo Stiks.One is 48" and the other,53#.With a slight change in sideplate thickness,these two bows like the same arrow.

I cut the 2018's to 30" and modified the 2016 brass inserts to fit them.I used 175 gr field points to get good flight on those bows.Those arrows with 3,5" fletch,weigh 652 grains.Now,I know most people break out in a cold sweat when you talk about that heavy an arrow out of bows of that poundage,but I like the weight,have no problems with the trajectory at hunting distances(I don't shoot 3D)and am impressed by the performance.I have since switched to carbons and they are heavier yet.

I also tuned up a set of 29" 2016's for those 2 bows,also using the 100 gr brass inserts and a 145 gr field point seemed to do the job.They weigh 602 grs.

Again,nobody makes the 2018 brass insert but it isn't hard to reduce the 2016 inserts to fit.There are 3 sizes of 100 gr brass adaptors for aluminum arrows-2016,2117 and the largest size escapes me.
