Anybody know where to buy spliced feathers?
« on: July 20, 2010, 06:49:00 AM »
Hi!
I`m building some new arrows and is planning to use spliced feathers.

Anybody who can point me in the direction for buying?   :coffee:

Usually I slice the feathers by cutting the feathers together and matching up the cut pieces on the Fletching jig. I did not know that anyone sold feathers that were already spliced together.

Yup, I do mine myself.  I also did not know you could buy them.

I've never seen spliced feathers for sale. Don't see how that would work.

Here is a nice example of spliced feathers, done for me by a friend.  I think you have to splice your own:

I bought some from Susan Noel two or three years ago. She did very nice work. Don't know if she is still in business but you can try her email at: [email protected]

Hi!
Could you give a tip about how you make the colour patterns on the shaft?

I tried to call the guy who made them for me, but he may be out of town.  If I can find out for you how he made the color patterns, I'll post another response later.

I got ahold of Bob Lawson, who made the arrows (I'm sure anyone from around here would already know that, as his arrows are pretty distinctive).  He said the color was made with analine dye, which comes in a powdered form.  If the dye is applied as the shaft is spinning, it will naturally bleed off to the sides.
