Does this arrow looks like its cracked?
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:52:00 PM »
I just recieved some Heritage arrows in and noticed this one particular arrow. It looks cracked, but when I flexed the shaft I didn't seem to flex any different or make the weird sound when you flex a split carbon. What do you think? Im not risking a arrow that could blow up, or even worse damage a  bow due to a faulty arrow. Mabey its the woodgrain finish?   :dunno:  The top one is the one in question, and the bottom one looks parculiar to me..

Looks like a cut in the wrap they use to do the wood grain. I've had a few have the stuff wear off even when shot a lot.

So you think its the woodgrain Dave? Would you shoot the arrow?

If it doesn't flex wrong I would. I have several with similar marks I shoot now, they aren't cracks in the carbon on mine.

I have had some GT that looked like that and it was just in the wrap.  However, I have also had some that looked like that and they were cracked.  Mine were on the point end though.  Did you try holding the nock and stressing the arrow to see if it looked like it was trying to split at the crack?  That's how I found out that my GT's were actually split.

If you tried that and it didn't seem to spread then I would think that they would be alright but it's hard to say without seeing the actual arrow.  I don't wanna be the guy that said it would be okay to shoot the arrow that blew uo your bow either.

Make sure your knock is tight. Some times if you shoot them and it hits hard it will split the back end. LCH

That's normal for those shafts.

If those are full length and need to be trimmed I know where I would make the cut. That would eliminate all doubt.

I have those marks (a line) running the length of several GT, I think it is just the graphics - I've shot them for quite a while

You may be able to sound check the shaft. Take a nickle and tap it against the shaft and listen. Cracks or weakened areas should have a dead sound.

If the nock is tight it is probably not cracked.  If you still don't trust it, swap ends.  Put the nock on the insert end and the insert on the nock end and refletch it.

Since it's by an end then check to see if it is all the way were the nock is. I once had a rod blank crack like this were the two halves went together. If it is also on the end were the nock goes in then it is for sure a crack and not a blemish. You may have to remove the nock to see it better. Better safe than sorry because you don't want to ruin a good bow for the price of an arrow.
