Fastest way to splice feathers
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:09:00 PM »
I was wondering if there is a faster way of splicing than the membrane strip method. I have done this and though it is not that hard i was wondering if i could just cut the quill where i want the splice and then put them in the jig and start gluing. I have searched all threads and all of the pictured ones are membrane method. Is there a pictorial of another method. I dont want to Jake leg it but i dont have the time that i used to before i had my 2 boys under 3 yo.  :deadhorse:

You pretty much described how to do it. I ve an old "Bowhunters Digest" around here that Bob Learn wrote. He does his splicing like you said but cuts both feathers together at an angle. Puts them in a clamp and glues to shaft.

That's how I used to do it. Get your measurements right, and cut both feathers at the same angle and it works fine.

I cut like you described.  I just take a 2x4 or equivilant and lay out my pattern.  Cut feathers with a razor blade, clamp up and glue(Tape actually - MUCH faster)

Once they are glued onto the shaft they look like they grew that way.  Pretty much cannot detect the splice at all.

I "butt joint"  my splices.  Just don't have patience to try stripping the membrane.  I do believe that the membrane method is more artistic but with eventually expendable "ammunition"  I find That butt joining is a trade off between appearance and expediency.
