Mountain Bikin' Scoutin' Trip w/ new pics
« on: July 31, 2010, 11:30:00 PM »
Well in my quest to get ready for a triathlon in 2 weeks and elk/mulie hunting in 30 days, I have been riding my bikes like crazy and shooting my longbow every chance I get. Tonight I decided to put 9 miles of dirt and gravel in and reward myself with a bean field that I know has been holding a group of great bucks.

My rig

My other elk training rides.

Miles of these tonight.

Reward time...found 'em!

Bonus buck   :)

Hiding go seek.

End of a perfect evening!

For those of us with bad knees, biking can be a great way to get cardio in before a hunt out west. I do it ALOT before leaving this flat country and heading out there. Throw in some pre-season scouting before I can get my longbow in my hands and it is just plain fun!

Man, there's nothing like looking down and watching the sweat drip onto your pedals.

There's a hill near the Cheyenne Mtn Zoo here in town I like to call the "hill of death" where I have seen bear, deer and turkeys in the early AM on my rides...

I hear ya COLongbow. I have a love/hate relationship with hills. Being a bigger dude, hills hurt me bad but I know when I do them it will help me elk hunting! I hunt south of you most years in the Rio Grande National Forrest. Plenty of hills there  :)

Here are a few more scouting pics.

A great young deer. He is the smallest of the group but he's got some serious genes.

Another pic of our upncomer.

This is a bad pic, but take my word for it. This deer is a giant. He would not come out of the high grass for a pic. He stayed in cover while all the other bucks fed and only stepped out right at dark. It was too dark for a decent pic in the beans, but I will hunt this buck hard.

Those bucks are looking good Mike

It sure is hard to worry about are training when hunting season is so close  ;)  It will pay off for you bud when you hit the mountains in 31 days.

Man what a difference between the mountain bike and the tri-bike, Kicked my butt the first time I got it out this year after riding the roadie all summer.

Keep up the good work!!

Nice TT bike. Like the firepro's also, do you run stan's? I ride with a guy that owns the local bike shop here, he always knows where there is a great downhill. I keep telling new riders that it is just a nice way of saying we are doing climbing today.

Excellent pics. Your season is looking good. I have a bad knee and the biking sounds like a good idea, thanks for the tip and sharing your workout/scouting session with us. Good Luck with the triathlon!

Went out again last night on the bike and found another great group of bucks. Slippin' in tomorrow and setting up a trail cam to see what I can find...

I hope to use my bike as a tool to reach these guys quietly this fall. WE'll see!
