Woodie Weight modification ?
« on: August 04, 2010, 09:19:00 PM »
Can Woodie Weights be shortened on a sander or grinder to change their weight, and still provide a good fit for the arrow/broadhead? Was maybe wanting to try to get a 125gr head to work on a arrow spined for a 160gr head!

I think it would work ok to take some material away from the woodie weight but you would need to remove about half of a 75grainer. I would try to add some lead shot to the 125 head, or maybe the internal footing jig. OR, mount the head and shoot it, it might fly fine. Good luck.

reparrows will lengthen the shaft and weaken the spine some, that might work.

I'll agree with Chuck; there's not gonna be much Woody Weight left by the time you get to 35 gr., not to mention you have a lot of grinding to do and still keep the taper correct and true.  I've been drilling the nose of the shaft and inserting 1/8" lead wire at 35 gr/in.  Quick, easy and it works very well.

What 125 gr head are you wanting to use?

I may try the Internal Footing Jig, thats a great tool! Any ideas on what to use to achieve the right grain weight im looking for, nail, solder, etc?

I agree grinding down the Woody Weights is not what you want to try.  The Internal Point Jig would be a great option, you'll only need around 1" - 1 1/4" of solder or about 2" of nail for the weight your looking for.

MN, if you go with the internal weight, 1/8" lead wire works great and is cheap to boot.  1" weighs 35 grains.  I have plenty on hand.

The 75g does not have enough material to remove any, its basicly a tapered sleeve, been there tried that. About all you can do is drill out the end, that only removed about 10g.

One thing you can do, take 35g worth of splitshot sinkers-put them in a new (clean) field point or blunt-heat it with torch till the lead melts-when its molten, tap it lightly on the bench to settle the lead-let cool for a minute or so then smack it on the bench and a nice tapered weight will fall out. Put that in your BH ferral, you will have to shorten the taper on the shaft a little but you should still have enough.

I've bumped 125's up close to 160 this way.
