abowyer large bonehead or wapiti
« on: August 05, 2010, 08:34:00 AM »
My brother on law let me shoot one of his wapatis. They shoot great. I was wondering if I should try a large bonehead. I really like the bigger cut but scared it won't fly. Opinions. Setup is 53@28 silver tip with 55/75 gt with 250 gr up front

I know guys that are shooting the wapati's and doing great.  I prefer the Brown Bear and will be taking a moose in Alaska with one if all works out.

Longspur.....1st off...what are you going to be hunting with the heads?

Abowyers are build like tanks and I've got both heads you are talking about.....no worries on the flight of the Large Bone Head at all....I prefer that one most times as well for most of the game I chase.....but nothing wrong with the wapiti that's for sure......Abowyers are a BREEZE to sharpen as well.

So, what are you looking to shoot with the heads in question?

Don't have any experience with the wapiti's but the large bonehead is my broadhead of choice. I use them mostly for Whitetails.

Terry,

I will be using them on Elk in 30 days and if they are as durable and awesome as everyone says i will use them for everything that i am physically able or financially able to hunt.
Elk and hopefully a bunch of deer.

So you think the bigger cut would cut down on penetration? i was thinking it may hurt it a little.

Lots of guys are using the Brown Bears.  I like a little more width and think the Wapiti head is a great compromise, especially with your rig.  I agree with Terry for sure.

Terry, can you tell us a bit more about those Boneheads and how they fly ?  Are you using large feathers for stability or sticking with smaller ones ? Yes, they are tanks, very well built and affordable.

Yes it would be more likely to happen with your equipment on elk.  Whitetails no problem all day long with that Bonehead.

I appreciate the help guys and Terry you have a good thing going here.Oh forgot to ask you on how you sharpen the Abowyers if you dont have a KME. I tried last night and got them pretty sharp but was just wondering if you had a special secret or file/stone that you use.

This is the arrow I used....5 inch 4 fletch.....I don't have any flight issues with them

Also, a grobet file works magicaly on the stock bevel.....just lightly file the bevel...and flip it over and flat stroke the back about twice....scary!!!

To sharpen my Boneheads I use a piece if leather charged with black buffing compound on a flat surface, and strop the edge. The edge on these broadheads is very straight  so it is easy to resharpen even on a knife stone.

That dude is bad looking, i may just ball up and get 6 of these because honestly my chances of killing deer are better than shooting an elk plus if they shoot the same then i will just take a couple of my brother in laws and shoot them at elk. I want to hammer deer with these. Thanks for the insight and i will need to find me a grobet file.

As long as your bow and arrows are well tuned to each other, shooting the big head won't be a problem.  You can use some extra feather, like Terry's 4x5" or 3x5.5", if you want some extra confidence.

I shoot lighter weights so I'm with Mike, I use the Brown Bears for penetration reasons and they fly great for me.
