good groups....what distance?

I see lot's of pictures with good groups on trad gang but hardly ever see anyone post the distance the shots were made from.  Not sure if it's me or my current bow or the arrows ....or I'm not close enough       Unfortunately anymore the only way I can shoot groups as good as what I see is with wheels, peep, and pins.

How far away is everyone when they post a picture of their groups?

From what I've seen, the usual distances are 10 yards or 25 yards.  Don't go to the dark side!  Keep at it!

I would venture that most groups are 20 yards and under, some way under. ON average, I can usualy shoot a 6 shot group in 4-5 inches at 20 yards, and 6-8 inches at 25, a little bigger at 30. That said, last 3 deer I shot were 30-35 yards,open grass or big timber, all dead under 100 yds. or so. But most of my deer are shot 20 yards and under, on the ground from pop up blinds, natural blinds and in a Ghillie suit with plenty of background cover.

The other night I shot ten arrows into a 3 inch circle from 24 yards.  It only took about fifteen trips back and forth from the target to get the last five arrows in with the rest.  To be honest, I only care about the first two.

Shooting with wheels is like having a vertical cross bow. Once you start to shoot well with a Trad. bow there is no looking back. It's more fun and if you hunt, it's more rewarding. If your having any trouble watch one or two of the DVD's on your style of shooting, it will help.

If your shots are all over don't be afraid to go back to the basics.Form is most important,and them the marriage between the arrow and the bow.I feel that form is most important,if you make a shot that is not on you may be compensating your form to get it to hit the mark.10-20 yrds is good for most game animals and thats what most of us shoot.

I have three new trad hunters who shoot great at 15 yards and that is their hunting limit this year.  How far you can shoot good is not as important as finding the limits, nocking 5 yards off that and staying in that range limit when hunting.  If you can hit a pie plate every time at 25 yards in my camp your range would be 20 yards for hunting.

Keep at it and quit worrying...

You will see a lot of tight groups on here on targets that have arrows holes sprayed all over the face.  You will also see tight groups and folks will have large target stops.  If they shot that well all the time those large stops would not be necessary :-)

I don't practice groups very often, sometimes I will shoot 4 arrows backing up 5 yards each time and changing the angle just a bit with every shot. So the last arrow goes at 25 yds.

I shoot out to 70 yds(it's my limit) only because it's all the range I have set up. If I could, I'd shoot out to 100 yds or better if I could just because its fun.

I also shoot a lot of 40 yd shots, but only because that's the distance from my back deck to the target.

Most of the pictures I've posted have been at 30 yds but that's because it's easy to walk out into the drive from my back door and shoot from that spot.

I doubt that I'd ever be tempted to take a shot on a deer at that distance. Too many things can go wrong!! I'd rather watch a nice fat doe or monster buck walk away healthy than watch it run off wounded with a questionable hit.

I have posted a few at 15-20 yds which is what I consider my longest effective hunting range and therefore my self imposed limit.

I know for a fact that within the next week I will be practicing a bunch more at 4-12 yds. These shots are what I plan/hope for under hunting conditions.

I limit the number of arrows shoot from these short distances because arrows are so very precious to me( as I'm sure they are to the rest of those who don't make our own)

I don't shoot for group's to much. I take a couple judo's and a tennis ball and go have fun. I also stump shoot, it's alot better practice "for me anyway" than trying to shoot tight groups. I just give the ball a good toss and shoot, if I hit it.. somtimes it will bounce 25 more yards, so I just shoot it from where I stand. Good practice and fun to boot!! Jason

i shoot my 3d pig, one arrow at a time. stump shooting is great for replicating hunting senarios.

10 -20 I cant take any shot farther when I know Its out of my comfort zone.If I am going to shoot it I want to kill it.anyhow if its at 25-30 chances are it will come closer.

To me this sounds like the voice of one that speaks the truth!

There is such a "ring of truth" that it hit me like a hammer when I read Ozy Clint's words.

I think I'd be stupid if I didn't change my attitude and actions toward how I prepare myself based on "truth". Now that I see it for what it is, it's almost a "duh!" for me.

I believe my future hunting satisfaction and success can be greatly affected by doing both.
