crack in the riser or just in the finish?

Hi,

after i was happy for half a day because i got it quiet and was shooting good, theres the next issue.

I found this crack in the riser of my Bob Lee and am though it looks like just the finish, i have fear it might be worse.

Did not notice when it appeared, had a nock exploding at release today, was a bit like shooting it empty.

What do you think? I shot it several times since i noticed the crack and there was nothing wrong.
What should i do?

The crack is in the middle of the two red lines.

I would email the pics to Bob Lee Archery and ask their opinion.  It doesn't look good though.  I had a similar crack on a Palmer riser.  He initially told me he was going to put some Super Glue in it and ship it back to me.  I told him that was unacceptable and he finally agreed to build a new riser for me.  I sold the bow as soon as I got it back.  Bad Mojo!

It doesn't look good from where I sit either!  I'd send it to to the bowyer as well.  It's right where all of the riser cracks appear.

I had to get rid of a Bow that had a crack just like that one..

Doesnt sound good, you cant imagine how my heart sinks right now. Its not only the bow i love but the only one i am able to shoot because my Bear stacks at my draw....sounds like a break in training seems to come, havent got the money to get a new one.

Man, that looks bad to me and right in the place you don't want to see a crack!! I think if you contatct Steve Smith, aka: "Bearbowman", that he has a Bob lee TD long bow at a smoking price on his used bow list..

Definantly a crack. Its wood so it can happen. Call Rob at Bob Lee first and after he approves send it back. Since its a dryfire situation it might be tough luck in this instance.

Dad's bob lee cracked in almost the same spot from a rtreestand drop. We drilled it and put a bolt through it, he shot it for two more yesrs before he finaly bought another riser! The bolted riser is still going as well.

I would not string that bow , much less shoot it. Its an explosive with the detonator in place and the match struck. Fire in the Hole. Send it back . probably will depend on age ect as to replacement.

now i am sure, it is definately in the riser. i can deel it with my nails and when bending the riser it opens up.

Yep it's toast!  Your real lucky it didn't come apart and bonk you on the head.  Dry fires can cause a lot of problems.

I had one just like it in one of my Fire Flies.  I had a nock blow up and it was ok, but about an hour later I had a brass nock of all things crack and fly off causing another dry fire type shot.  That did it.  Glue didn't work because the crack is hair line and there was no way to get it in far enough to do the trick.

I am not going to tell you it will not blow up or crack more.  I would send it in to see what they think.  It is best not to shoot it.  Your crack looks like to could angle into critical areas to to the limb bolts.

My crack was past the grip, and I figured the weak point was the grip throat and that is where the most stress from draw is going to be.  The crack was from a dry fire and excessive forward flex of the bow vs. back flex from draw weight.  I didn't think my bow would blow given many bows of the same wood and weight don't even have all that extra riser wood sticking out there.  On my bow that wood was all part of the design, and the crack was past the grip and upper limb connection area wood.  The crack was not running in grain that would take it into a critical area.  It was more the decorative area of the riser, and probably cracked mostly due to the fact it was that far from the bending neutral line of the riser.  The farther out you go from the neutral bending line the more stress you get.  I figured at most maybe the crack would grow so I could get glue in it.  I shot it about 3000 times or more with no issues.  In the end I had that part of the riser cut off and a new section added then reformed.  That saved the greatest part of the riser and all the hardware.
