Need my hide tanned
« on: August 26, 2010, 07:32:00 AM »
Well, we have a (first) deer hide from last season in my freezer. I would like the freezer space opened up before October.
She would like buckskin made of it for the leather.
I've done this from scratch myself before, so I would rather pay someone to do it for her.
I live on the Indiana/ Michigan line.
Can anyone offer advise on where I can have this done?

Thanks All!

Moyle, like most tanneries, doesn't do buckskin tanning.Keep in mind, tanneries that do buckskin usually only accept skins at a certain time of year and that's it.It is a totally different process than hair on tanning.

The only two I found were  www.sivkofur.com  in NY,they accept hides from June 1-Aug 1 and quilcedaleleather.com in TX-they take in hides starting October.

I'm sure there are a few more but don't expect to find a lot who do buckskin.I haven't used either of these.

Thanks for the responses.
Seems to be the same that I've been finding out. $225 to tan a hide?
I hate to say it, but I guess I will "help" tan this one.
Can anyone suggest a good at home chemical tanning method. If not I'll get it to rawhide stage and wait for some fresh brains.    :banghead:

$225 can't be right. It should be closer to $50.I would give them a call.Sivko also does lifesize skins for the taxidermist and with all the feet, head, facial details etc..I have to think that the $225 is for that.A call would sort it out.

Hickory stick always worked good when I was a kid  :scared:

Brain tanning is hard work but the results are worth it. I did one earlier this year and have 2 more to go.

Nite lite sells a product called "Tannit" I have tanned a number of deer hides(with the fur on)with this stuff and it works great. Deer hunter's hide tanning formula (orange bottle) works well also. I tried another product this past trapping season called "Dixietan paste" and had good results with red fox skins as well.

THANK YOU!
Looks like UBER will be getting a package shortly.

We did try the local Taxidermy shop, and that is where she got the outrageous quote from.

I tanned three hides last year using soap and they turned out good. I still need to put them through the smoking process to waterproof them and give them the buckskin color.

It was a pretty long, drawn out process; there is a lot of waiting. On the last hide I sped up the stretching part by using a hair drier on the hide to help dry it out while I was stretching it. The soap I used was Fels-Naptha.
