Is there a particular type of bamboo that makes a better shaft?
What about size?

I am not sure about Bamboo but river cane makes excellent shafts.

Tonkin cane is always popular.
Also Japanese Arrow Bamboo, Pseudosasa japonica,
and Korean Arrow Bamboo, Sasa coreana.
