plains quiver dimensions

I would like to make plains quiver for 12 arrows, but I don't know the ideal dimension of the mouth of the quiver. Could someone tell me right circumference of the mouth of the quiver. If you can please, tell me data for full length quiver and exposed fletching quiver?

Your arrows are probably not the same length as my arrows, so you will have to measure them, decide how far up that the quiver should cover them, and make it so.

Here is a pic of two quivers. The one on the left was made by Barb Dumas. Before I got that one, I made a prototype, to see what dimensions I might like in such a quiver. I used an old pants leg... how cheap is that?   :D

 

Other than being rather wide at the top, it worked perfectly. So, now all I need do is measure where the top seams should be, mark it, take it apart and use the   good  material to make a REAL one, right?  

Well, this one works, I am not trying to impress anybody, and I am lazy. So I used it for ten years, and in the meantime I have acquired a mess of quivers of many styles.
One day I may make a pretty one, when this one wears out...  

Oh, when you smash the mouth of Barb's quiver shut, it measures roughly 8" across. Don't forget to leave extra material for the seams.

Experiment! Most of what you see here is an American take on an old Native American design. I would love to see a Slovenian accent applied to it!

nice quivers killdeer.the pant leg idea is great.i saw a guy make a bow quiver to put on his horse.he also used the pant leg.looked like it worked really well.lisjak,i think there is plans for a quiver in the how to section on this site.good luck to you,steve

I just measure my arrows and make it fit my arrows.I find that standard dimensions don't always fit everyone.Thats whats great about making your own quivers,make them to fit you.

yup i make a few and i have a 26" draw and my arrows are 27" long i make the Quiver long enough to cover half the fletch and the opening is around 8" - 10" then tappers down to 6"-7" and the strap is 60" long. they are the best Quivers i have ever used and thats why  i make so many. good luck with that any problems drop me a pm.

does the open end of the quiver go on the side of the string hand ---or on the bow hand SIDE ???

Personal preference as to which side you wear the quiver on.  On the plains it was generally worn on the bow hand side so you could easily get an arrow while on a horse.  When you go South West or East you start seeing them worn on the string hand side just as much.  I typed up some instructions on how to make them with pics a few years ago... if you send me your email addy I'll send it out.

versus crossed in front when on the bow side.
       
Each has it's advantages and disadvantages.   I usually wear them on the string hand side.

I think the reason for a quiver on a bow hand side was if they were mounted on horse back they could swing the quiver in front of them and it would then be on the string side.
