Hogs at my local nature preserve, can we hunt 'em?
« on: September 12, 2010, 12:59:00 PM »
I guess I need to actually ask TPWD as the nature preserve is on the outskirts of Dallas (where I mountain bike weekly). Seems it'd be like shooting squirrels or something as season is always open/no defined season or licensure needed.

During yesterday's post-flood clean up / trail cleaning day, I was amazed at how awesome the hardwood bottoms are at this nature preserve that we get to ride through. Remember, I am looking for an Osage stave down in there. Usually on  the bike, I am moving 12 mph so you miss everything. Quickly the subject of biodiversity in the preserve came up and I asked about the presence of feral hogs......the trail steward tells me yes there's hogs there on the furthest out trail to the south. I told the group that if a guy in shorts dragging a hog, and carrying a bow is spotted, nobody knows nothin!!!

.........Since this invasive species is considered an exotic animal by TPWD, they can be legally hunted year-round with no harvest limit. This makes Texas a popular destination for hunters nationwide. (A license is required for recreational hunting, but not to control hogs that are damaging crops or property....."

Wonder how hard it is to ride with a longbow..........

Alex we use bikes out west I just dont like arrows carried in any thing that gan get loose, I make sure they are in a case that is secured with a good latch system. make sure you can hunt that area legally and ask an officer not a steward... JMO

I live in Frisco.  If you get the go ahead and need a partner to hunt with I would be interested.  I have a feeling you will not be allowed to hunt the area(just guessing where it might be) but since they are concidered nuisance animals you might get lucky.  Let me know, I would love to stick a pig close to home.  Not trying to horn in on your spot so I won't ask where exactly these pigs are.

Highpoint are you referring to the one at 114 and the George Busch toll way? I've seen a lot of coyotes there.

Probably not. There are lots of hogs in the George Bush part in Houston, and because of location (and money) it is not open to hunting. The city of Houston tried to open it to hunters but the Army Core of Engineers shut them down saying since it is a flood control area they are the ones that makes the decision about hunting it. Really a bad call all around.
Ask me about CTO.

Hey Magnus that's heading towards the North Shore riding area along Lake Grapevine. Saw a huge, huge male bobcat last time I was playing golf up there at The Tribute Club.
