Well another gloriously beautiful but frustrating day in the turkey woods for me. I had selected a spot based on previous sightings. Hadn't been there long when I heard a turkey gobblin a couple hundred yards away.I called he gobbled, crows called he gobbled, he gobbled more than any bird this season. After an hour of listening to him sound off I decided I had to move. Grabbed my stool and deke and ran down the hill, cutting the distance in half. Set up the deke, crawled back in the bush and got ready. At one point it sounded like he was coming, and had closed the distance to 50 yards. I let out one series of soft yelps and got ready. The next time he gobbled it sounded like he was 100 yards away again. Finally he went silent and I waited about an hour, but that was it. NO more turkey talk, no turkey. I came in for a cup of hot tea.

One more day.

Mickey, The first(and only) I went turkey hunting was in north GA with a friend. We had a similar situation as yours but it went on til noon and we never saw the bird. That day I realized who the turkey was and never went back.
In your first pic, it's hard to tell who is more surprised, the stump or the bird.    Pat

Pat, turkey hunting is a mixture of profound beauty, keen anticipation and utter frustration. It takes it's toll on a part time amatuer turkey hunter like me. I know just enough about turkey hunting to drive myself nuts. Still I'm out in the newly emerging greenwoods with bow in hand and it doesn't get much better than that.

I think this is a case where hunting shows and videos do hunters a disservice. In the shows and videos it never takes long for a big matuer tom to come full strutting into view. Walk right up to the dekes and get himself reduced to table fare.In real life, at least in my life, it doesn't happen like that.

I guess when you are hunting with primitive equipment, without camo, and without a blind, you can't expect much better results. I've run into just enough dumb ones over the years to keep me coming back.

It's a beautiful day, I'm grabbing a shower, changing clothes and going for a motorcycle ride.

Sounds like a plan, Mickey. It is a beautiful day. Not many more like today this year!  Have a nice ride.

WE have one of the tree faces my daughter gave us a few years ago. Always gets remarks.   Pat

Mickey your hunt sounds like mine this morning.  Only difference was the two bucks that walked between me and the turkey while he was strutting in the field.  They caught my wind and off they went right toward the turkey.  That was the end of that hunt.

Cool pic! I had one going good today, i set up in my blind had the decoy out at about 12 yards. My first series of calls  produced a red fox that came in to about 20 yards, it must have winded me because it froze then bolted. Were do you think it ran? that's right it headed right to the gobbler, that was the last i heard or saw of it today.

but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

That's turkey huntin. More frustration than grilled breast fillets, but at least we're out in the woods. When it all comes together, there's no finer table fare!!

The challenge is what keeps me going back.  It wouldn't carry the same sense of accomplishment when everything goes right if it were easy.

Killed this bird last weekend.  Cheated and used my 870.  Took almost 2 hours to get him to come to within range of the shotgun.  Was telling my buddy that and he said that he never waited more than 15-20 minutes for a bird to come to him.

Maybe he has been watching too much TV?

The so called hero pic.  I told myself four years ago that I wasn't going to kill another turkey untill I got at least one with my bow.  The last several years I have taken a lot of rookie turkey hunters out and got their first gobbler so it was time well spent.  I just really wanted to kill a turkey this year.
