limb swist

how do you correct a slight limb swist in an older bow? is it worth the effort, i'm thinking of buying one for a back-up, if the price is right. i know! when you buy something you can't see first, it's that "old pig in a poke" help me out guys.

Run it under hot water to heat it up then twist it past where you need it.  When you have it twisted in your hand hold it there and run it under some cold water.  This was inTBM and I used it on a bow I bought.

If it's a slight twist you may be able to just twist it back.

I've used a hair dryer to heat up the limb and take out twists of a few old bows.

And, yes I've found that it is well worth the effort.  All of the bows that I shoot now are 30+ years old, and my new favorite just turned 50.

I have used a hot moist rag and twisted it slightly beyond where it needs to be.  You might have to repeat it a few times, just be careful not to go overboard.

Before trying the heat, put in a copy of Jeramiah Johnson.  While watching this top ten of all time movies, twist in the opposite direction and hold it. Time will go by quick and if the limb is fixable without heat, it should be done by the time the indian sees Jeramiah trying to catch trout in the brook with his hands,  Trivia question...how many trout does the indian have on his stringer, and what is his backquiver made out of?

If your finish is not good soaking it could cause damage.  i have taken the swist out limbs by just getting them warm with some sunlight and then just bending them a little past center.  rubbing them vigorously with a leather glove on my hand and repeating until the bow came straight, also has worked.  It may be necessary to do it again in the future if it has a lot of memory.

Good tip pavan, I like that kinder, gentler approach to sneak up on a slight twist on an older Bear I have. Bucksdown, pavan's idea sounds like the first thing to try, then up the ante with the more aggressive suggestions if it is still twisted.

(off topic with an apology to bucksdown, it's his thread)Yornoc, my 20 yr old son and I communicate a lot with quotes from that movie. Drives my wife up the wall since she hasn't watched JJ the dozens of times we have over the last 20 years. Last night after trying unsuccessfully to help him answer a trigonometry homework problem, he looked at me and sadly said "Elk don't know how many feet a horse has!" That was code for "Nice try Dad"
