Elk are lucky

I have heard it so many times and it is always the same they are lucky . How can you explain it any other way, turn and walk the other way just when they are walking right down your way ,or how about that wind,blows your way all morning and when the elk steps out now the wind at your back. How about having the elk walking on the same trail you are on face to face. I think I hate them.   May need counseling

Having hunted them my entire life I would say that elk are not lucky, instead Murphy sits on our shoulders and we are unlucky.  It sure does seem like they are a bit blesssed at times.  I experienced the wind problem over and over this season.

How about still hunt, glass, play the wind for 7  hours. then lay down for a few minutes of nap time, or as I call it "Happy hour"  open one eye and elk are walking away at 15 yards -- and then gone.

Joe, I had that experience a few years back in Colorado.  Took a nap waiting for afternoon while sitting next to a trail, bow across my knees and elbows on my legs with head in hands.

For some reason I opened my eyes and looked right and there was a very nice bull about 25 yards away, standing on the spine of the saddle, sunlight beaming down on him like light from heaven. .  I think the angels singing woke me up.

He had several trails he could have chosen, several of which would have allowed me to reposition and shoot. . .  but he chose mine. You know what then happened.

It was great to see him that close.
