totally confused RH - Rh or LH Helical?
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:23:00 PM »
Hi, just saw a video with Paul Brunner and now i am totally confused.
I am Right hand shooter (left hand holds the bow), do i need to use Right or Left helical fletching?
I know that Right helical needs right wing feathers and vice versa, right?

I am anxious that all my arrows are wrong now. But can they be wrong, i mean they shoot good as far as i can see.

Please help!
Thanks Axel

It doesn't matter, as long as you don't mix them on the same arrow. RW for right helical is correct.

Ohhhh, thank God.
Because Paul Brunner states in that video that a right hand shooter needs to use left helical or the arrow will kick off the shelf.
Thanks for the quick answer, thought i did it all wrong.

You can use either, I'm right handed and the only problem I encountered was on my one longbow my hand got hit by the feather. I moved the nock a little and no longer have that problem.

Machts nichts.  People usually buy for whatever clamps they have for their jigs.

You can adjust the nock for either.

As above, either all LW or  all RW, whatever fits the clamp that you own or buy.

If you are using single bevel broadheads the broadhead bevel(Left or Right) needs to match the feather. But if you use double bevel broadheads (most do) no issue.

I've seen that video. If I remeber right he also says, "... and don't let anyone tell you different!"

We all have information that was passed down.  Some of it is not true, but we don't know that, and sometimes strongly defend it.

I think TradGang folks are changing a lot of those misinformations.

I shoot both ways and don't see any difference.  Whatever feathers I get the best price on is what goes on my arrows  with some caveats:

as above
if you are shooting a single bevel broadhead, it makes sense to have the arrow turning the right direction to avoid the energy robbing act of the arrow rotation being changed once it enters the critter. . . they have to match.

all of the feathers on the one arrow need to be from the same "wing" and positioning.

go get em

I shoot right handed with right wing and man they fly good! If that is a no-no according to that video I can imagine how pretty they would fly if I used left wingers!

I sold my friend his first trad bow(RH) and gave him a half dozen right wing arrows. He went to a local hunting store and they told him that he is shooting the wrong fletch. I had him come to my house and shoot and there is no difference. I shoot right to keep my points on tight.

I agree with Paul, it dates back to when everyone shot wood. Ya glued on your nocks, shot cock vane out and did not rotate your nocs and all that. A LW will spin away from the bow hand or knuckles of a righthanded shooter and vise vera. A great example try shooting a selfbow without a shelf off your knuckle if you are righthanded shoot a RW feather and see what happens to that knuckle, almost positive you will draw blood. Shawn

The arrow can not begin to spin until it leaves the string.
Slow motion photography has shown us that the arrow does not begin to spin until it is well past the bow.

I got a new batch of arrows and they were right wing feathers and they would slice my hand until I turned the cock feather. I prefer left wing and I am right handed.

I suggest you buy a good fletching jig and both left and right clamps. I look for feather deals and do not want to miss out because I can only do one wing or the other. For my longbow I do use left wing only. For my recurve I use either but do not mix wings in the same doz.
