Brought a tear to my eye!
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:30:00 PM »
My son called and said I needed to come over because Noah (my three year old grandson) wanted to see me. I drive over to see what the boy needed and he comes out of his room with his toy pistol on his hip and asks me to take him deer hunting.

Tommorrow afternoon we hit the woods! Love this kid!

That is so cool. God bless you, what a influence you must have. Continue to enjoy the little one, I have so many memories of the times with my grandfather. It is amazing the things he will recall many years later. I am almost 47 yrs old and recall some of the times that most people would never think make an impression on a child. I miss my Granddaddy greatly.

The sun is only half way over the horizon and I am on sensory overload. The sounds in the woods have me looking around trying to see everything at once. Even though the sounds are foreign to me I’m not scared because he is here with me and I know that I’m safe.

He walks soft barely making a sound but I stumble and crack twigs making way to much noise but he says nothing about it. We settle under a tree to wait for things to settle down and for the squirrels to start running the tree tops. As we sit I look at the shotgun in his lap. I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I reach out to touch the scratched and worn stock.
I am lost in a boys thoughts when he leans over and whispers “There he is, see him?”

I look but my untrained eyes see nothing but limbs. “Look where I am pointing.” And suddenly I see the squirrel with his question mark of a tail sure that he is hidden from us. I watch him waiting for the shot but am shocked to see him offering the gun to me. “You shoot him I’ll help you steady the gun.”

I am trembling as my senses kick it up a notch. As he leans over my shoulder to help with the gun I smell the milk barn, Prince Albert and Old Spice. I aim and say a boy’s prayer to not miss. For a six-year-old letting his Pa down would be a fate worse than death.

I pull the trigger and the squirrel begins the last trip to earth he will ever make. Pa gives my back a pat and says, “You did it!” I am thrilled, sad, and anxious for the next squirrel the emotions mixing and welling up inside me.

I pick up the squirrel and he asks if I want to go to the house to show my grandmother and I say yes. On this morning a hunter is born.

That story may be one shared by Noah someday. It is your turn to be the one to change a life forever Grandaddy. What a awesome privilege you have at hand to share this moment. He will recall this day shared with Grandaddy for the rest of his life. You are a blessed man.

What a wonderful day you will have.  Your story made me think of my grandfather.  He is missed every day.

My two year old grandson is playing at my feet as I read this.  I look forward to taking him to the woods with me, so I can be a friend to him like Grandpa was to me.

God bless your family.

VERY COOL!     Nothing can compare to the love and life a child can bring to us.
What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth

II was 9 years old when my grandfather  picked me up on our way to NW Kansas to pheasant hunt.
Ford station wagon, dog box in back,Colman camper in tow. In the middle of the day and in the middle of no where . He says “Im hungry”.  That fast we hit the shoulder, he gets a small grill out starts a fire. I get 2 small camp stools and we set up 10yds from the hwy. A few minutes later as he checked the big T-bones,my grandfather , a man of considerable financial means. Stops looks  at me and says “this is living”. He was right and I love that feeling.
Im sure your grandson will always have this in him. Congrats  TERM
Still looking for something I might of forgot.

George,

Looking back on some past bad times, you can see the treasure that life holds even amidst the fog of life. The Son will always break through and bring golden rays to light the path.

Congrats on a job well done. Grandpa, you have new purpose!
