I can't help myself
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:18:00 AM »
Well, here I am with another pile of bows that I want SOOOO badly to shoot but they are just too short. Not many guys shoot 64" and up recurves, and I see some KILLER bows for sale and have to try them. I am a sucker and a half for a nice looking bow. Got a BEAUTIFUL Schafer Silvertip, walnut riser, checkered grip, antler knobs, praire rattlesnake limbs, fell in love with it. But it's 60" and doesn't shoot like my 64" Tips.   :(
Chastain Wapiti, put brazos river snake on the limbs, great shooting bow, but too short.   :(
Morrison Shawnee, carbon foam limbs, eastern diamondback skins, bighorn sheep tips and caps, phenolic riser. JUST too short. If I can get a C riser I think I'll be good with this one.  But nobody ever has a Morrison C.  VERY expensive brand new.   :banghead:
Oh well, I'm just whining. I know all you guys NEVER buy too many bows.
Im gonna go try and shoot 'em all again.   :deadhorse:

Maybe if I shave an inch or two off my bow arm......

I only buy 68 inch longbows cuz I am a tall guy.  They shoot like a dream.  Just say no when the urge comes calling and only by bows long enough for you.

I solved my bow buying problem completely a couple of years back, I started making them.  No more bow buys....

'Course, now I can't stop making them!  I have as many bows as ever, one more hanging with the finish drying and lams cut for the next one and I need some more wood for the one after that and then there's the new riser shape I want to try and I'm so busy building I haven't been getting out to shoot as much as I should and...........

It's really too bad Dave Guthrie stopped making bows. Unbelievably quiet. I shot my first big game animal ever,a 200 pound black bear with a cocobolo Savage River. The bear continued eating grass after it was shot, then laid down and went to sleep for good. What part of Maine are you from Kevin? I'm up there all the time....

I don't mean to be insensitive but all those fine bows look like 2nd's since the sight window was placed on the wrong side of the bow!

Yep, I have a half-dozen too many if shooting them on a regular basis is one of my reasons for keeping them.  I'd sell 3-4 of them but I just can't part with any -- I bought all of them new JUST FOR ME and as lefties they only fit about 1 in 10 archers anyway.

Yep, that sounds like one of Dave's bows. I started my trad journey with one of Dave's Middle Mountain longbows. It still has top spot on my rack, along with another Middle Mountain, a flatbow and an Elk Mtn. 50's style recurve. So if that old, outdated bow needs a home, send her down here and I'll make a spot for her    :readit:

I'm originally from WV and live in VA, but we just moved back. I lived almost 6 years outside of Bangor and guide in the Forks/Greenville/Bingham areas.

Luckily I have two longer sets of limbs for the riser. They don't perfectly fit, but they shoot like they were made for the riser. I just really like the look of the tight grain zebrawood on the 58" pair. Plus there is a really thick hemlock I will be hunting from this year and a 66" bow is not the easiest to handle in there!
