training your eyes to see game
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:39:00 AM »
This is what I see when I open my eyes in the morning, not a bad view. On weekends I spend a few minutes looking for the deer that are sometimes out there, I kinda think of it as blind training. This morning I saw one big deer all alone and I thought I might finally be looking at my first buck, then I realize I'm so sleepy I haven't put on my glasses yet. I grab my specs and I see a fawn nearby with it's head down and clearly no antlers on the big one.

Then this dawns on me, I saw that doe in the woods at 60 yards and I have 20/400 vision! I start thinking about it, the first time I saw them out there I didn't have my glasses on at first either, and I had to explain to my wife with 20/20 which tree to look behind. It's really amazing that even with a big handicap in that situation, all my years of watching deer in the woods became such a huge advantage over untrained eyes with perfect vision.
