I turn mine inside out to keep the material from fraying. Wash it on gentle cycle, rinse in baking soda, hang it out to dry. Mine is few years old now and I honestly can't remember that it smelled any worse than any other new hunting gear that I buy. What brand did you buy and what material is it made of.
My optometrist is a bow hunter and he had a burlap ghille that he said was too hot and eventually rotted away. I got the light weight ghillie that Cabela's sells and it is very nice.
