Whatever happened to the Sika deer hunt
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:43:00 PM »
Last year a bunch of us talked about a Sika deer hunt. Did I sleep through it? I was wondering the outcome and if there will be another one.    :campfire:

Do you mean Sika or Sitka?
The Traditional bowhunters of Md. just had a Sika hunt at Assateque Island a few weeks ago...I didn't get to go cause with a new daughter in our house I can't get out so easy...Heck I haven't even got my license yet but I'm getting the itch really bad to get out...Maybe MaMa will let me have some time soon...  :dunno:

It's M/L season right now until the 30th so a hunt after would be preferable.  Too many people in blaze orange in the marshes right now.

Tim,
If you are hunting Assateaque you better do a web search for hunting the island cause it is totally different then the State...I haven't been since the mid 90's and much has changed as far as what is required...Keefer's <")))><

I hope you guys come back with stories and pics. I would like to do a Sika hunt someday but there are other species ahead of them first.

I just love the looks of those Gnome Deer      :D

Tim,
I wouild google the public hunting lands in Dorchester County.  Also check out Blackwater as you can get a permit to bowhunt there.  You may have to do this next year though.  All of this land is 90% under water and very swampy so lots of scouting is required.  No motels around to my knowledge except for Cambridge, MD so camping is an option at Madison Bay campgrounds (primative).

Go to  www.mdwhitetail.com  and check out "The Wallow" forum.  It's all about Sika hunting.

Good luck.  PM me if you need some information.

I just collected my first sika stag this past Monday. reddogge is correct, most of the areas
they live in are pretty swampy. As Rich said, for the best chance you need to do some scouting. This can be a pretty challenging hunt if you get back in the marsh areas and into the higher waters.

I'll post some pictures when I get them. I forgot my camera   :o  so my buds took the pictures and I'll have to wait until they can get them to me. There's more to the story but I'm waiting on the pics.

Don't know about Chincoteague but there are hunts on Assateague and you can camp there as well.  Big complaint about the island is the deer know where they are protected in the National Park and tend to hang out there.
