points not staying on
« on: October 25, 2010, 11:24:00 PM »
Recently i've been having trouble getting my glue on points to stay on my wood shafts. I have tried archery hot melt glue and duco cement but neither of them have stayed. I am just recently having this problem. Maybe the glues arent as strong in cold weather? i dont know.  The points have pulled out in my 3D target and other foam blocks.
I have been looking at the brass screw on points from 3rivers, does anybody have any experience with these?
        Thanks

I've heard there is a different type of glue stick that is more flexible and less brittle in cold weather. I think BigJim carries it if I remember correctly, but don't quote me on that.

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow’s effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs

The biggest thing I've seen is making sure your points are clean.  The glues just won't stick to oil left over from the mfg process.  Use a good solvent; burning it out just doesn't work for me.  Bohning Ferrule-tite has a rep for getting brittle in the cold, but IME, it has to get at least into the 20's.  That said, I prefer the big Kimsha stick hot melt glue

As Fletcher said, cleancleanclean until the inside of that point is clean. Many glues will work well on clean points but few will do any good on a greasy or oily point.
Personally, I find epoxy to be better for me than hot melt. And before anyone brings it up, an epoxied tip may easily be removed with heat to change tips.

Oh, yeah...
Those brass points look very cool, I used the glue-on version once on a guy's arrows and they were great.
However, they are pretty costly and if you're using the screw-on version you'll probably want to get the special pliers so you don't mar the head, that's an additional cost.

Try a wire cone shaped brush for inside the field points. Don't use oversize points, use 11/32 points, not 23/64 on an 11/32 size shaft. Clean any paint of taper, or sandpaper to roughen the surface.

I have used Bohning and Hot Melt glue gun with good results. I put the glue on the shaft, then heat the point, push it on and turn with pliers to spread the glue, then wipe off the excess. Spin test the point on a piece of wood, and cool in water, and spin test again. Heat the point with a butane torch, or alcohol flame, don't use candles because they give off wax.

I have a Yellow Jacket foam target, and found that it likes to pull off points, in spite of what the saleperson said.  Some targets are better for broadheads only. I like a Block, or similar target when shooting field points.

I too had problems with points staying on. I now use a two part epoxy. Make sure your points and the arrow tip is clean and old glue free. They do come off easy with heat added to the tip.

Quite honestly, I never clean my own shafts. either gold tips, CX or Arrow Dynamics. I used to clean them when using cyanoacrilic glues and also when using epoxie's but to no avail. We would always have some come out.

Since i switched to the quick stick (yes, this is the glue from Kimsha) I've not lost an insert and that goes without cleaning.
With that said, we have done 1000's upon 1000's of shafts this year and if there has been an insert to come out, we are unaware. At least no one has called us to let us know. I will tell you that when we were using the cyano we would routinely get phone calls telling us of how the inserts were coming out.

thanks, bigjim

I use acetone to soak points. I then use a gun cleaning brush attached to drill to scrub out the inside of point. Dip again in acetone and swab out using q tips and let dry.

....put my points in a coffee cup, cover with denatured alcohol, swirl a min or two, dump out and let em dry on a paper towel a min. Take a piece of rolled up sandcloth and twist inside the heads a few times to scratch it up so the glue can grab. Takes 5 min to do a dozen field points. Push hard when seating points with hot melt, the thinner layer of glue is stronger than having it globbed in.

What I do for my glue-on points is to get a NPT 1/16-27 pipe tap and tap some threads in the point to give it some teeth.Clean with alcohol and use a white colored hot melt.It stays more pliable and is stronger then Ferrl-lite,Ferrl-lite becomes too brittle and especially in colder weather in my opinion.
