nice day in the woods but no cigar
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:09:00 PM »
Got set up plenty early. then about sunrise several does came from the west about 70 yards away but were headed quartering away from me.  Took my trusty fawn bleat and spooked all of them.  About 45 min later, a lone doe trotted from the south but about 40 yards away.  Once again tried the fawn bleat, she turned, looked my direction, and I am pretty sure, said, "You're on your own kid."  About 1/2 hr later, saw lone coyote walking fast on a deer trail.  He did not even twitch his ears to my fawn bleat.   About 1/2 hr after that, I saw a doe being followed by a nice 8 pt.  i stayed quiet this time, she presented an 18 yard broadside but I was hoping for the buck.  I think the wind was wrong, he lifted his head and turned around the way he came.  By this time, the doe was also spooked and no shot.  Still later, I took a practice shot, drilled the leaf I was looking at and immediately saw a spike/almost forkie to my right.  He walked casually by my tree, I could have dropped an acorn on him.  About 20 min later, two does were coming by but I think I spooked them when I grabbed by bow off the hanger.  By this time, the sun was casting shadows, I was slightly downhill from where they approached.

Hope you don't mind me adding to this. I went in a little late but it didn't matter as the deer came in late also. There was a lot of action in this spot yesterday, so I figured I'd try it again. I was still hunting sitting on my 360* stool, it's pretty comfortable even though it doesn't have a back to lean against. So I am sitting there contemplating the problems of the world, and thinking that it is getting late, where are the deer already. Then I hear the faint sound of crushing leaves off to my right, no sooner do I look and there is a doe coming up on me fast. The doe stops dead in her tracks and is just standing there about 8 yds. from me stomping her hoofs and blowing. Then she walks around me and keeps making noise, until she bolts away. Then the spike chasing her comes up on me, and he starts where she left off with the stomping and blowing. I figured I am not planning on shooting either one so I just stand there and check them both out. The spike figures he'll show her how brave he is and he gets to within about 5 yds. from me but he still can't figure out what I am, so he keeps trying to get as close as he can. You know it's amazing how everything looks different when you hunt from a tree stand, well it's the same when you hunt from the ground and your use to hunting up high. Deer look pretty big when your on the ground with them. They finally get bored with me and continue the mating ritual that brought them this way in the first place, and I start getting my things together for the short trip off of the postage stamp I hunt on.
