A spine question for Carbon footers...
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:28:00 AM »
Hi,

i want to foot my carbon arrows with alum shafts.
How much does it affect the spine? Id like to end with about 4-6 inches of footing but stus calc gives me cery weak arrows as results.

Would have to use mfx classics in 600 spine or carbon express heritages in 075 (with 100brass insert and 125gr tip, 30,5 " long)

Bow is a 56@29,1/16+cut, fast flight Signature LB.

Does a footing really stiffen up the arrow that much?

What you recommend?

Thanks alot!

Foot one and check it's spine on a spine tester. Then go from there. You would obviously have to cut them down at that point from the nock end.

Why are you footing 4 to 6 inches?  Mine are 1.5 inches and toughen the front of the shaft up nicely.  The shorter footings have no affect on spine.  a 4 or 6 inch footing will definately stiffen the spine on the arrow.

One note here,  Stu has a great calculator until you start getting into higher foc.  It doesn't work well with HFOC or EFOC arrows.

My arrows are 600 spine - full length - 300 grain arrow and adapter set up with aluminum inserts and Easton 2016 footing that is 1.5 inches long.  I am shooting them out of a Wes Wallace Royal R/D longbow - 55lbs at 30.25 inches.  They fly like bullets.

I only foot mine 1" to 1.5",like said 4" to 6" will affect spine and you would be drawing it into the shelf. The main thing with a footing is to just protect the end from cracking or to mushroom.I have only footed arrows with HIT inserts.

i was thinking that the longer insert perhaps wouldnt completely penetrate while 3D target shooting and therefore would be easier to pull.
perhaps ill have to rethink.
