Easton Axis vs Beman MFX classics.
« on: November 10, 2010, 09:26:00 AM »
I've been shooting the Easton Axis in 500 spine in my Toelke whip.  Just for the heck of it, I got some Beman MFX classics in 500 spine to try.  I know they are suppose to be the same arrow except for the addition of the woodgrain finish.  They are the same length as the Axis. I installed the same brass 75 gr inserts and fletched them the same.  I can't seem to get these arrows to group worth a darn for some reason.  I know they weigh a little more due to the finish but I would not think that would make all the difference, especially when the finish adds weight along the whole length of the arrow rather than on just the tip.  I would not think that would affect the spine much if at all.  They all group to the left even when I use heavier tips(I'm right handed).  They also don't seem to group as tight as the Eastons.  Has anyone else found this to be true?  I've thought about trying the 100 gr inserts from 3 rivers but I'm not sure I can get the 75 gr inserts out.

I like experimenting with different arrows and I have dozens of different ones but so far I've not found any that shoot as well as the Easton Axis or the AD trads.  I was hoping the Bemans would work well too.  I guess I might just have to quit playing and stick to these two.

thanks
Dave

I shoot Beman MFX Classic's and they shoot fine,I also will tune my arrows even when I buy the same arrows.Even if they are the same spine I will tune them again. It could be due to the extra weight of the shafts, like Axis 500's are 8.0 gpi and Beman MFX Classic 500's are 9.7 gpi. That and the finish may make a difference even though they are both 500 spine arrows.Just a thought

Ditto above. I shoot 500 and 400 MFX Classics with 100 grain insert and love them.

I'm gonna go with the crowd on this one.  They are different arrows and require proper tuning to your bow.  There aren't many shortcuts when it comes to getting arrows to fly right.  Good luck!

It's really simple different arrows require retuning. Your just a good enough shot to tell the difference. Some are not. Frank

Keep in mind that the spine may be very close between these two, however due to the front of center being much higher with the Axis if your point/insert weight is the same in both shafts because the Beeman MFX has a heavier grain per inch and that will put more weight at the back of the shaft compared the Axis shaft. I shot both from my Super Shrew longbows and the Axis arrow flight was much easier to tune than the Beeman MFX.  Do the FOC calculation and you'll find a difference there and that's probably the difference in your arrow flight.

Thanks for the help guys.  I am going to keep playing with the MFX's until I get them right. Sounds like I may have to increase my FOC more to get them shooting correctly.
