Making a change

I have come to a place/time that I am going to make a change.

I shoot several different bows and of several different designs.

That's going to change and if at all possible I will have it implemented by the end of 2010.

I doubt this is worthy or of any concern to anybody but myself but I am moving away from all of my bows except the ones that are Hill style.

You might wonder why.  As stated above about liking to shoot different bows and I think I can at least make my switching back and forth easier if I keep them all of one design.

Watch for it!! Please help me, this isn't going to be easy but I think it's smart or at least smarter than what I've been doing. Maybe I can become more than a mediocre shot if I level the playing field a little more.

The curve?

Just close your eyes and run your hand down the back of the bow out the end of that longbow limb. The hand moves along nicely and at the end it simply falls off.  

Now, same thing with a nice (note the bias) curve. The hand moves along as nicely as on the longbow but with a bit more support from the wider limb. Then as your hand comes to the end it is caught up in the graceful dip and immediate curve upward and one can't help by  squeal "wheeeeee"! I'll admit the trip isn't as long ont the recurve but the change in direction is sort of like a wooden roller coaster.

Do it Mudd, do it! Did that Hill style thread make ya think about it? My custom Hill style long bow in my hands is almost as nice as..... well, my wife! Oh I'm going to die now.

You have to do what you think is best, I know my shooting would be more consistent if I stuck with one style of bow....BUT....I like to try stuff and maybe I just haven't found the style that suits me yet.If I ever do and have a sale on what's left I'll be able to pay for a real nice trip out west........lol    good luck!

I doubt I'll run out of different bows to try even when sticking with just one style.

My experience tells me that just because two bows are made by the same person and everything seems outwardly to be the same, every bow has it's own feel, it's own way of flinging an arrow.

There has been more than once I found one that felt just perfect in all aspects so I trade for or buy another just as close to it as I can find. The only differences shouldn't have been nearly as great between them(IMHO) but different they were.

I wonder to myself had I acquired them in a different order if my preference  for the 1st one might have been different.

Old folks, go figure...lol

Mudd my trick to makng that happen is keeping ONE that you really love and another "cheapy" is kept around also. I have found that I get bored with a certain bow and my first thought is I need another, or I need to trade. When that feeling grabs me I grab my beater for a few days and realize just how much I love my one and only. I have a 1971 Shakespeare Peco's that lets me know just how good my Robertson is and the boredom goes away. Plus having one bow leaves more cash to buy shafts, feathers, cresters, quivers or anything else you may want instead of another $500 bow. And yes, my shooting is better than ever as a result, same grip, same draw, same cast all the time.

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish!

If you want to be  a better shot and more ethical hunter, it sounds like you are on the right track.

If you enjoy buying, selling and trading? well, there's certainly room for that in your life too. If you like collecting, go for it, that doesn't mean you have to be "fair" to the bows and alternate shooting them. shoot the one you love and every once in a while you can have a bow explosion and shoot em all in one day and then hangem up for a while.

In the end Do what makes you happy!!!

Personally, about September I pick one bow and stick with it through the end of December.

Very well said Pearl Drums. Keep your favorite and then a backup.When you get a little bored with your favorite,shoot the backup. Pick the favorite up again and it is like getting a new bow.

 Roy, I think it is the only way to go myself. It makes sense and that works for me. Most of us all go through this full circle,then return to the bow that is really special to us.

 That "special feeling" usually has a lot to do with hitting what we shoot at, how it feels and sounds while we shoot, and do we like the outward appearance of the bow. It is the lucky man that comes across this combination and says "This is it."

 I am in the process of doing the same as you. Slowly but surely selling them off. When it is over I will own two. One will be for hunting,the other will be indoors and 3-Ding. That one I just purchased after shooting it a few months ago at a Bow Hunters Festival. The hunting bow will be ready in April. The bows.....Leon Stewart's Slammer's.They are it for me!

My disease is just more specific now.

I am having fun just wondering if the shorter straight limbed bows shoot like the longer ones.

I saw an ad for a 60" HH "Half Breed"... dang. Can it shoot and feel like any of the 66-72" longbows?

So much to learn and so little time and money...lol

I am just about there myself. I have 3 Hills and one St Joe River, and a recurve being built by Maddog Archery. I will keep the recurve just to have one on hand but, I am eventually going to go to all Hills for hunting purposes. They are light to carry all day in the woods and I shoot them pretty well.    

I have a developing love affair with Howard Hill bows.   :D
