Well, to say the least, it's been an odd year up to this point! All the stands were setup early as always...4 ground blinds....2 tree stands. Bill, my best friends came down from El Paso to hunt/spend a couple of weeks with us. As always I make sure Bill gets the best stand...well he shot 2 deer, so he's happy. Me I haven't hunted from a tree stand in about 10 years..but I decided this year to give it a try. I placed the kill zone Only from a 3 target at the tree stand and shot seval days. I had it down!!! We have 3 LARGE old doe's at my place that I have been trying to kill for at least 4 years! Names are Maggie 1, 2, 3,! Now Maggie 1 is the oldest, easy to ID. She has a ALL white belly, and the insides of all 4 legs are white! Smartest deer I have ever seen! I hunt a funel/travel route, on 19 Nov (my birthday) after many, many days in the ground blind or tree stand, it 4:30 PM, sun set here at 5:30. I'm in the tree stand, and look down the fence line, about 800 yards to the east. Here comes Maggie 1, I can tell by all the white on her! She's to smart to walk thur the funel, she will cut back to the south and pop out of the treeline about 60 yards out as she always do! But wait..10 yards behind her, is a nice deer..man he's nice! Both are still movin' toward me, it's getin' late and the sun is falling fast. Just as always, 20 yards from the funel (50 yards out from me) Maggie 1 makes her turn to the south...but the other NICE deer, keeps movin towards me. I have't seen this guy before, but if he offers me a shot, he'll be on diner table tonight! 5 minutes to 5 PM, Maggie 1 pops out just like I knew she would, 40 yards in front of me! She freezes, looks at me like she is staring a hole thur me!! This other guy is now in my shooting lane, 10 yards in front of me! Maggie 1 is looking...my shooter deer decides something isn't right! He turns and starts back the way he just came!!! It's now or never, I make a small growl with my mouth and he stops at 15 yards. I draw, pick a spot and let the Lime color arrow fly! Everything seemed to be in slow motion, I could count every rotation of that shaft within those 15 yards, I hear the "Whap" as the Zwickey cut thur the near side ribs just behind the shouler! As the guy jumped and turned to his right I could see 6" of arrow hanging out his right side! He won't go far! Maggie 1, just stands and looks at him, almost like she was sayin' "I told you not to go that way!!", "better you than me!" Well, the little spike bucks ran about 30 yards and piled up! He is the best eating I could aks for! For Maggie 1, We've still got a month and half to play our cat and mouse game!
