The Good and the Bad
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:04:00 PM »
The good thing is that I got a call from Brian Wessel the other day and my new Tall Tines is nearing completion. It must have turned out well because he is taking pics of it for his website.
The bad news is that back in September old age made a major leap in catching up to me with some nerve damage in my neck with strength loss in my left shoulder and bicep, which means that all I am going to be able to do is look at this bow when it gets here. The neurosurgeon says no operation right now that it may heal back to 95% which would be more than enough to draw this bow, so I wait.

Hey, but what better incentive to stay with the program the doctor orders for recovery than to look at the new bow every day!!

True, but there is not much to the program. The doc' told me that all the therapy and weight lifting in the world wouln't help because there was nothing wrong with my shoulder or arm, the problem is where the nerve root comes out of my cervical vertebrae, and the only thing that will help is time because nerves are the slowest healing tissue in the body. That makes it a little frustrating, but today I curled a 30# dumbell which is way up from the 10# that I started out with. I've got an old 1969 Bear Polar at 28# that I'm shooting just to keep my mind right, squirrels beware.

Hang in there man... From experience, do what the Dr says.  They usually understate the final condition.

Keep at it and I hope it works well for you.

This time in 2008 I injured my shoulder (carrying lumber) at the same time I was trying to return to traditional. I spent Dec.-July, 2009 doing three band and a light weight rotator cuff exercises.  They didn't feel like they were working one iota until one day in late July the pain was just gone!

DAVID; HAD THE SAME THING, SAME SHOULDER.  BY THE TIME I HAD IT CHECKED OUT, IT WAS TIME FOR THE SURGERY.  HAD A STEEL PLATE FUSED TO THREE VERTABRA ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO AND I'M BACK TO SHOOTING MY 50 LB. BOW, JUST NOT AS MUCH; ABOUT EIGHT TO A DOZEN SHOTS AT A TIME.

NERVES DO REGENERATE, JUST S-O-O-O SLOWLY.  I'D SAY I'M ABOUT 75% NOW - -

Got the same problem, except I can't shoot right handed at all, so I have been learning to shoot left handed.  The squirrels don't have much to worry about this year.  Bill

David, going through the same thing started about the same time. Nerve and disc problems and found arthritis in my neck. Ruined most of my bow season. Selling off my heavier bows. I'm hoping for that 95% too.

Good luck to you

Dave,We must be from the same batch.I was to have my 3rd spinal operation this week but it got postponed (for the third time)until after Christmas.I have severe nerve damage and Chronic pain in my left arm. It's hell getting old!The bows are getting lighter all the time,I can still manage 60# but whatever the weight I pay dearly later in the day.

Prayers for a quick recovery so you can enjoy that new bow. Tall Tines are some nice looking bows.

The good thing is I can always have a lighter set of limbs built, and that might not be a bad idea, something around 50#.

I hate to say this.. but not all nerves regenerate. I was told there was a possibility that the nerves that operate the diaphragm on my left side might regenerate and it could take up to 3 years.

That was 18-20 years ago, the left lung still doesn't work.

I went in every six months for three years for a complete work up each time only to be told at the end of the 3 yr period that it wasn't coming back.

I'm getting along fine without it but just a little slower..lol

I hope yours recovers completely and that's exactly what I'll be praying for you.

God bless,Mudd
