Leg Wrappings for Stalking
« on: December 01, 2010, 12:00:00 PM »
Hey guys n gals. New to the forum and new to the world of trad hunting. Have read lots on wrapping the lower pant leg to assist in stalking. Was thinking of using snug fitting wool gaiters. Any advice appreciated, or pics of your set up. Thanks.

Check some of the military surplus stores for leg gators. The Marines before my time used to wear them and some other military countries still do.

Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a
difference in the world, but the Marines don’t have that problem.

Sounds good. I have a pair of Sleeping Indian Gtrs but do'nt really want to cut them apart to tighten them up around the shin.

Yes, they work well.  Mine have a leather strap at the top of each upper outside seam (where the wool is sewn together) to tie around my belt and there is a seperate buckled leather 1/2" wide strap above each calf.

Quiet and they add a bit of warmth.

I don't see the need. I stalk often with out gaiters. Is it supposed to be quieter? I wear wool pants or bibs any way.    :dunno:

I wear wool as well. At this point I have only seen it in books and articles. Just wondering if it is worth it. GF Asbel has a couple photos in his book on stalking.

No need for gaiters if you wear wool pants unless you're hunting in deep snow or wet conditions, where the wool gaiters will keep the snow and water out a little longer.

The use I observed was actual strapping or lacing around the calve of the lower leg to prevent snags. Makes sense, guess you would have to find a good tension for moving around and crawling if required. Rather than using the laceing i thought the gaiters would work, while keeping the muck out.
