Snow
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:03:00 AM »
There is nothing like a fresh couple of inches of snow. Snow unravels all the mysteries of nature and lets us get a look at wildlife without having to be there. It always amazes me what animals do and where they live. For instance yesterday it snowed for the first time and we covered my hunting area and there wasn't a fresh deer track to be seen. I could go back today and the woods could be full of deer.

In Pa. the hunting pressure is intense and the deer, especially the big boys get real abnormal. The usual bedding areas aren't where they're at, behind someones house or a little thicket in the middle of town is where they hang out. If I jump a big one I like to track him for awhile to see what he does and log in in my mind for the next time I'm hunting there to get one step ahead of him. I pick out my next years tree stands by watching the deer trails, 90% of the deer use about 10% of the woods.

Anyone got any tips on hunting in the snow.

I really miss the snow for exactly those reasons.  Its like reading a book.  I was born and raised and learned to hunt whitetails in Mercer Co where you are but moved south about 10 years ago.

My tip on hunting in the snow - don't move to Alabama!

Snow?     :saywhat:    What's that?     :dunno:    Since I live in southeast Texas and I'm 90 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, the last measurable snow we've seen was in the winter of 1983.     :D

Texas is a big state. From Beaumont, Tx to El Paso, Tx; the distance is around 800 miles. To put that 800 miles into a proper prospective; from El Paso, Tx to Los Angles, Ca; it's around 800 miles.

It snows in Dallas which is 250 miles north of me, but close to Houston which is 45 miles southeast of me, we're usually too warm to get any accumulation of snow. It's 36 degrees as I type this and today's high will be 68 degrees.

It surely does change things as they relate to hunting.  You think a deer can be quiet in damp leaves?  You should (not) hear them in a few inches of fresh snow.  But they sure do show up better visually!

Only downfall is that it eats arrows when bunny hunting.

Snow, I got snow and more snow.... I got almost 18" in my front yard.  I would give anything to be in 70* weather and never see this stuff ever again.

I hunt mostly public ground. Call me lazy, but we have miles of it and few deer after boom-boom season. I like to drive slow with my window down for miles looking for well used run ways crossing the road. I find the closest parking area and head in with my climber. Its my favorite time to hunt, Im alone on Public Land. So yup, love the snow!

We've gotten 2 measureable snow falls in Sugar Land in the 6 years that I have lived here, where have you been? Haha ok so the snow lasted less then 12 hours, but it has snowed.

The late season with snow is my favorite. We got a couple of inches yesterday. I even saw a buck on a scouting trip to a brand new spot!

Wooleybugger,
Here in northern New England, the tradition of cutting a big track (typically by driving woods/logging roads) and tracking a buck in the snow is commonplace. Unfortunately, it's a low yield effort with traditional archery gear. In general, if you're on a track that's "bee-lining" through the area you can pick up the pace. Once the track starts to meander, slow down and look hard he may be bedded nearby. Good luck.

When you got that snow, we didn't get any and we're a lot further north than you. It was explained to us, we were in dry pocket of air so no snow.

Went out this morning after about 2 inches of snow here yesterday in No Mi, deer had been all over  foraging for  acorns! They must have moved after dark last nite, as we got a little dusting of snow overnite  the tracks were not real fresh! Never saw a deer but am going to give it try in the PM I have seen most of my deer right before dark anyway!Weather is supposed to be stable today and Sat  before the next lake effect front moves in! Squirrels were out in numbers  and also found some fresh Coyote tracks!

It's great in moderation.  We got a truckload of it last year and it seemed to shut the woods down - mostly.

The Sasquatches were out and about...

... and we noticed the squirrels got MUCH more aggressive - probably due to having to dig deep in the snow to get at their nuts...
