montana l/b tuning
« on: December 04, 2010, 01:16:00 AM »
I'm still having trouble getting my Montana L/B tuned right. I'm shooting 28" 35/55 gt.s with 125 gr. tip, my bow is 55# @ 28 and my draw is 27".
My brace height is set at 7 1/4 " and the arrow spine seems to be stiff. The string is maxed out so I can not decrease the brace height anymore.
I thought that these arrows would be too weak but they are showing the opposite.
  Any suggestions?

You might try increasing point weight with a heavier head or you can screw GT weights behind the insert.I bought some used carbons that were already cut 1" past my draw and they were showing stiff. So I added more front end weight and the more I added the stiffer they showed. They were in effect bouncing off the riser instead of flexing around it.I like to start with my carbons at full length with the front weight I want. And tune and trim from there, and then let tuning determine their final length. On bows not cut past center I like my carbons longer.Try to add some weight behind the insert with screw on weights, they screw on with a long allen wrench from the nock end.

a classic example of carbon arrows that dynamically spine lots stiffer than the dumb charts list.

do what john suggests, up the point weight.  try 50 grains at a time - it may take over 100 grains to straighten things out.

What was said above is on target. I don't understand why your string is maxed out. To tight of a twist? I run my Montana at 7 3/4+ brace. I shoot full a length arrow with  200gr up front out  of a 50 or 55 pound Montana with good results!

The string is maxed out on the low side, meaning that I can not untwist it anymore. My brace height is just under 7 1/2 and it wont go any lower. I will try adding weight inserts today and see what happens.

Richie,  I'm using the 3555's and other 500 spine carbons in my bows 53# at my draw length and the arrows are cut to 29" with 300gr. up front.  All the charts show them WAY weak but they fly like darts out to 30yds no matter how big of a broadhead I put on the front.  My bows are cut to center and I don't believe the Montana is, so you may have to add a bit of weight up front.
Chasing my kids and my degree for now but come next fall the critters better look out.  ;)

The local bow shop where I live doesnt sell inserts , so I'll have to figure out where to order them. Any suggestions?

3Rivers carries the PDP adjustable weights, I think they'll work w/ the Gold tip inserts. They also sell the Weight Tool you'll need to instal the inserts. Give them a call, they'll help you out.

I like that PDP weight system.  Don't have to mess with replacing an insert and jump 100 grains when maybe 30 or 50 will do the job.

What Rob D said.  Have loved my Gold Tips, but after I but up the last of them I'll never use carbons again.  Wood all the way.  Way easier to tune, less expensive, and I can do ALL the work myself at home.

Richie,

I have two Whip longbows and like you I draw to 27. 1 is 52lbs at the weight the same as yours. I shoot beeman mfx 500s out of it cut to 28.5 with a 75gr insert and a 175gr point. Arrows fly well like this but I'm contemplating going up to 200 as I think I'm still a little stiff.

My other Whip draws 49@27. The same arrows fly straight with it using either broadheads or field tips and bareshafts group right in there as well but they do show nock right in flight (i.e. starting to get too stiff).

Hope that helps, I thought it might given that our bows/setups are near identical.

Rossco,

Thanks for the info I just ordered a dozen 50gr inserts. I will add 100gr first if that doesnt work I'll go to 150gr. I think the 100gr insert should get me pretty close.

Is this a Bear Montana longbow we're talking about? If so, I thought the recommended brace height for it is 7 1/2" to 8 1/2" which, if true, would make a 7 1/4" brace height a bit low. FWIW, I have my Bear Montana l/b brace height set at 8".
