Boy Scouts ready to join the Gang
« on: December 11, 2010, 07:02:00 PM »
Hi Gang, I am a scoutmaster for a troop that would like to build or finish a bow to shoot. I have 25 boys that would like to shoot, I need your help and guidance. Can anyone help with contact information for a bowyer that would be up to the challenge of building 25 bows for under a $100.00 a bow?

Why not teach the boys to make a board-bow. Then they can earn a badge.

Thanks Guys this is a great start. I will check out the Maddog’s website, thanks wildwood
Wildcat that would work as well, after I told my guys about my times at Denton Hill they are all fired up. The goal it to get them slinging arrows and ready to camp at Denton Hill, this is their goal and now it’s mine as well. I've got some work to do, finding a bower that will take a job like this on such short notice. I want to have time to get these guys shooting so they are somewhat ready.

My boys are also part of a Scout Troop. I have found that purchasing fiberglass bows is the way to go. Our Troop has about twenty of them. They belong to the Troop. The boys can use them anytime. If they like Archery, Christmas is here! Mom and Dad can buy them a bow.

The merit badge calls for them to build an arrow and string. They will also need to qualify.

The Troop owning the bows allows you to pass this on for some time to the younger and new boys.

One of the other things that our troop does is to host a Archery Shoot at Acheivement Day for a Cub Scout pack. Kids from 7 to 11 years old get to shoot a bow!

Look online to find some cheap fiberglass bows.

HTH,

Martin

Thanks Martin, good idea I think the guys want a project of working on their own bow though. I found a bowyer that I think will work one of the gang members gave me before I'm going to try and call Monday. Rudderbows

Bruce,

Let me know how that works out. I may need to do the same thing in the future. I would love to see my guys get into it more.

Google "U-Finish bows" and you'll find some builders that make bows where most of the work is done except final sanding and finishing. The youth models are usually very reasonable. Rudderbows and crowsheadoutfitters are some off the top of my head.

This way you they wouldn't have to worry about tillering but can go home with a nice bow. Can advance the ones that show more interest from there.

Welcome to the forum.  I hope more scouts are brought into traditional archery.

I got my start with my Archery Merit badge in 1962 from Len Disbrow here in Kalispell.  He kept me interested in arcehry so I have been making arrows and strings since then and started making self bows 15 years ago.

I have been in Scouts for a combine 43 years now.  I am the Shooting Sports Director for Camp Melita Island.

I bought PSE 'Buckeye' bows for the camp and would steer clear of the solid fiberglass junk.
There are also someother brands of these traditional take-down (removable limb) bows in light weights for beginners.

There is no badge for making a bow, but it is a lot of fun.  You do need a few of the right tools, a good book or two and a lot of patience to get the bow to turn out well. (You make and arrow and a string for the badge)

Rudderbows.com had a lot of U-finish bows are hey turn out well.

PM me for more info on Scout shoots, camp or camporee programs and other fun archery stuff!!
