first set of arrows, 4 fletch
« on: June 01, 2007, 03:23:00 PM »
This is my first set of arrows (actually, my first year using a bow), and I wanted to make them 4 fletch. I want to use Beman Venture 400s. I use 125 grain broadheads, and the feathers I already have are 5 inches. The Beamsn are 8.4 grains per. inch.

I think the Bemans would fly perfect at 32 inches, but that is based on 3 fletch arrows. I was wondering if anyone with expirence could help me before I buy the shafts. I'm a poor college student and dont have the money for many mistakes. Thanks for any help.

What kind of bow are you going to be shooting, what is the poundage and what is your draw length? You can do four fletch a few different ways 4x90,75x105 or 60x120.

Sorry, forgot that. I'm shooting a 1966 Bear Tigercat at 62 inches and it is marked 45lbs. I measured it with a fish scale and it measured 42lbs. It is marked at 28 inches, I draw it to 29 or 30, depending on the hunting situation. I'm not sure what the angles of fletch is. I know it's helical and I have a Bohning left helical fletch jig that I got from 3 Rivers (  http://www.3riversarchery.com/Product.asp?c=2&s=8&p=42&i=4081X  ).  That's all I know of at the moment. Thx

I would say ar your draw you are pulling around 45# to 48# and with a dacron string.Beman Venture 400's with 125 gr. heads might be alittle on the stiff side.Beman 500's might be a better choice with 125 gr. heads.400's can work also but I think you would have to add some more weight upfront like heavier inserts with 125 gr. heads.Plus the 400 if you use heavier inserts your arrow will be over 500 grs.I'm not familar with the Bohning fletcher but it says it will do 3,4 and 6 fletch. You can do 4 fletch 60x120 on the 3 fletch setting by putting on a cock feather and then a hen feather and then pull the arrow out and rotate 180 degrees and put on another feather and rotate back to the start and install the final feather.Better instructions are found on the Foxfire Traditional site a sponsor here. Are there any local archery shops by you where you can get an arrow or two in the 400 and 500 to try first, you might have to strip vanes off them.

I bought a thin diameter easton 400 (forgot the specific name) and it is amazing. Im using 4 5" feathers and a 45lb. bow. It was shooting almost flat at 40 yards. Thanks for the advise on the 500 size, but I got them cut to 30" and these 400s are so much quiter than my old Gold Tips. I dont know why people dont use 4-fletch more for hunting situations. It penetrated almost 2 or 3 inches deeper too.
